Throwing down the Gauntlet!

Oh, come on now, stop trolling. You know the answer's Case. You're just stirring up trouble. ;)

For me, it will depend on which model of Case. If its an 18 series, no. If its a 47 or 92, it would be a hard decision. I have been carrying my Buck 301 for awhile now, and it has never disappointed me

I'm not a good judge of stockman knives as I can't really get comfortable with them. But both brands are very good knives so there is no wrong answer. I might actually be inclined to give an edge to the Buck due to my happy experience with the 302. Ed J

I like the yeller 301, BUT the springs are not as strong as I would like them to be. Ruled out the 8OT?

I looked at one of the current generation 301s a short while back. The 'weaker' springs on it, compared to what I've been accustomed to, are the one thing that made me hold off of buying it. To me, the knife just looks like it should be a little more crisp, with the closing snap. Otherwise, it looked quite good to me. I know Buck produces very good blades overall, and the aesthetics and ergos of the 300-series knives have always appealed to me (one of my favorites is an older, Camillus-made 307). But, I was somewhat disappointed with the softer pull on the newer Buck. I know this is a personal preference thing; I'm in no way knocking the quality of the knife, overall. I haven't ruled it out, and I may still pick one up someday.

And, as alluded to above, the Schrade USA 8OT is a very good one to consider (also a favorite of mine).

I like both, but I sweat a lot when I'm working outside and the CV will sometimes rust without me even handling it so I lean toward the Buck.

Tough call,I like both companies a great deal.I might lean towards the Buck on this one though.

You can get both. I did! Carry a BUCK 301DW and a Case Old Red PW just about every day as EDC, 301 RF pocket and Old Red in watch pocket, it’s a simple pleasure but what I enjoy.

The Buck is much bigger so you should think about which size of knife you need more.

For really working, the Buck would be my choice, but for EDC, I think the Case would be what I want, because of the size and the CV is much easier to resharpen.

Kind regards
Andi

I have not noticed any difficulty in sharpening Bucks 420HC, to me its about the same as Case CV (i have a sodbuster in CV to compare with my Buck 301 and 309)
and in the humidity of mississippi, the stainless is a life saver, i've had the case CV start rusting down here in the summer just looking at it :/

I handled a 301 at a surplus shop in Salem this afternoon. I really do not like the exposed tip on the spey blade. Why Buck chose to do that, I cannot guess. To top it off, the springs are about as strong as my stag bone Case in CV (ie not very). So, I guess the winner would be my Case.

However, if Case upped their springs a few notches...and Buck brought back the 307 in all its glory, then it would be a real contest.

Somewhere along the line, Buck got the scales turned backwards. The high end of the scale is at the wrong end of the knife. This is quite plain if you compare the Camillus version to the Buck version. Changing it would require extensive retooling, so I doubt it would happen. That being said, I've never caught my finger or dulled the edge on the exposed edge of the Spey. It just looks a bit odd.

The 307 was only made by Camillus. Buck would either have to sub it out or build all new tooling for it.

Apparently, these things happen.

Could it be that the new 301 has the spey at the same end as the clip (swapped positions of the sheepfoot & spey)? A more 'standard' stockman config, with the sheepfoot at the same end as the clip, is what I see on most stockman knives. In that config, the end of the spey would be oriented toward the 'higher end' of the handle.

Ditto!!

This is the reason why I put my yeller CV penknife in the drawer and started dropping that 303 in my pocket. I sweat buckets at work during the summer months and I noticed the clip blade on my pen was starting to spot a little bit. I haven't had that problem with the Buck. However, when it finally starts to cool off around here, I'll start carrying my Case again...I hope.

Also, I looked at a 301 the other day when I was at the gun shop...and it's a pretty big knife to be totin around in the bottom of my pocket. Now a Case medium stockman in SS seems to me the right choice between those two. IMHO.

I own both knives, always seems the Case ends up in the pocket most days. I love the Buck, but there's just something about that Amber Bone handle.....
