Throwing Things Away

Several years ago, I decided to throw out a bunch of old paperwork I had squirreled away in some file boxes. Things like old bank statements, tax returns, etc. I even had all of my LES statements from when I was in the Navy (I've been out for 34 years, now). Since these documents might have personal information on them (SS number, etc.) I fired up the shredder and went to work. So much garbage paperwork, that the shredder motor burnt up. Had to run out and buy a new paper shredder. Being neat is expensive. 🤣
Yes! Can't win!!

A badly calculated plumbing job just helped me:rolleyes:, ugh. They installed a dry well, and instead of storm water accumulating in the dry well, it went into the basement--blew out the pump, wrecked the driveway-- and what a mess. This was a $10,000 job. So far the only upside is that they (re)cleaned my basement (anything that got wet/damaged). There had been very little accumulation left as I recently got down to basic necessities.

They managed to ruin all of the new items I had been airing out or storing with need to use right about now.

Count me in as a hoarder (I prefer the term “collector” 😁) of many things! House is spotless, but I’ve got stuff shoved under beds, in closets and a garage full of tools (dad’s/grandad’s and great grandad’s) and other items! Got clothes I haven’t worn in years and probably couldn’t get into if I wanted to (unfortunately, not because they’re too BIG! 😩) Need to start cleaning out……might just start there and see where it goes! Unfortunately, kids nowadays don’t want mom and dad’s, much less grandma’s and grandad’s stuff”! All those things they or we have collected over the years, will be sold at a garage sale or thrown in the dumpster! Might as well start doing it ourselves and save them the time AND hassle!

So true! Puts things in perspective! I’m having trouble mobilizing family members, enlisting their cooperation. I want to dispose of something, discard it, and next thing I know it has been retrieved and stored by someone else. 😵‍💫

I attacked the garage/shop on saturday.
it was a little slow getting started, but once I got into it, the bags started to fill up.
seeing the progress was good. probably another 2 days out there to thin out the stuff, and another week or so of organizing/reorganizing/relocating

Sounds good. I had am immense feeling of satisfaction bringing to the dump a full truckload (F150) of trash and recycling from my garage. Not all that much, but now I can walk from the front door to the back door of the garage!

Its gets harder when you get the big stuff thinned out only to reveal stuff like old shoe boxes you used for storing smaller stuff.
I had a few dozen shoe boxes in a closet that I thought were mostly shoes. They were there for years! Turns out only a few pairs of shoes and the rest were full of useless junk. I sorted a few box contents and looked at everything when i started then but then switched to a quick look-see and if nothing stands out, in the garbage bag it went. Fanned each box out on a table, good quick look then sweep it into the garbage bag.

Feeling victorious after emptying and disposing of a 10 drawer dresser. (That was a lot of work--getting it down the stairs.) Decided I'm going to make room contents fit remaining space or out it goes. Feel some shredding coming on (trying to keep the momentum up.)

I tried something new in case it helps anyone else: I put feltac on the bottoms of a remaining desk and file cabinet so that I can now slide them on the hardwood floor in case I have to reconfigure the room. Worked up an appetite.:)

I don't know a lot about myself but I do know that I'm not a fan of nostalgia, as a feeling in general.

Outside of family photos and such, I'm happy to get rid of most things that are devoid of utility. We only have this moment ;)

I did that with a regular dresser and was worried it was going to get away from me. A 10 drawer is much heavier!
Losing a big piece of furniture in a room really helps make a room work better for you. Congrats!

LMT66 LMT66 thanks!

4 of the drawers were 1/2 size so probably = 8 full drawers, still a challenge. I wound up wearing heavy-duty Playtex dishwashing gloves to keep my grip. Onward and outward!

I’m up to my eyeballs in scanning and shredding.

I preceded this with a computer-wide trashing of old documents, downloads, files etc. why add new files on top of “messy” HD?

Then, I got this! So glad to be reminded of expired tea bags. That should open things right up! 🙂 IMG_0873.jpeg
