I've always had a lot of fun practicing throwing knives in the backyard. Great stress releiver. I want to progress into throwing tomahawks but I have no guidance in what to look for. Cost is a concern for me, so the $50 throwers are out of my league. Anyone have some suggestions or pointers?
Thanks all!
Mike

My suggestion would to try and find a small hatchet at a garage sale and "rehandle it" with a straight handle; perhaps finding one that is about a pound in weight. I saw one this summer that was made by cutting an ax in half.

Or start saveing

Best thing for you to do is get your hands on a H&B shawnee, they are easy to re-haft (unlike a hatchet which won't last long throwing) and they are very good throwers. I have around twenty tomahawks, hi and low end, some for carry and some to throw. I have just as many throwing knives and i don't use anything nearly as much as my set of three shawnee's. Their very economical in price and so you don't have to worry about giving them a beating (price is allso a concern for me). they are very good for the money and under 50$'s.

Go to a local "rendezvous" if you can find one. These are men and women who dress up and act like 1840's fur trade people. They will be selling and throwing tomahawks and knives, they'll be happy to let you try it and probably teach you how to do it.

I've said it before and I will say it again, you don't need to buy a hi-tec expensive specialty hawk from a particular manufacturer to get into this. There are a lot of goodolboys out there making inexpensive hand forged hawks that are just fine for throwing and cutting other stuff.

Don't forget we have a Knife Throwing discussion group here where throwing hawks is a frequent topic, and participating are some of the country's best throwers. Go there to get details on throwing technique.

Also, we have an Axe, Hatchet, and Tomahawk discussion group, where you can get details on what types of hawks throw best.
