thrust bearing source?

I'm having a bear of a time locating a part I need for an old lathe I recently acquired... it's a thrust bearing with inner shaft dimension 1.25" and outer dimension 1.75", and .25" thick. The original has an old, thin sheet steel bearing cage and 9 bearings that mic at .227". No washers were used in the original design.
I'd make do with just a crummy ball bearing (there's one missing, so I at least need to replace it), but I'd like to freshen 'er up with the whole assembly. Anyone have any ideas for where to look?

Thanks in advance, gang!

If this is a spindle bearing you're going to need a very high quality bearing. Figure on spending some money

If you have the OD, ID and thickness, you can usually find something at mscdirect.com or mcmaster or grainger.

Are there any number on it anywhere?

Perhaps Scott, the bearing guy, can chime in?

Have you checked with Motion Industries?

You could ask this question on the Practical Machinist forum, too. Lottsa sharp cookies there. make sure and have the Make/Model and preferably year of manufacture.

Here's a detail of the headstock in question... the part I'm talking about is labelled as "Ball Bearing End Thrust".

As you can tell, this ol' girl is not so young. As far as I can tell, this particular bearing really has no load on it other than to reduce end shake. It didn't have too much of this - even with one of the ball bearings missing!

I couldn't find anything at the usual sources (MSC, McMaster-Carr, etc.).

Thanks for the input guys - I'll try and post a pic of the suspect in a bit.

Motion Industries has stores all over. The bearing and/or races will have numbers. They can cross-reference them and get you the correct bearing.

If not, they can probably measure yours and match one up that way. It doesn't sound like an odd-ball size at all.

Follow Joe-Bob and Fitzo's advice! Go to Motion Industries. They are a bearing supplier. The others mentioned (MSC, McMaster, etc.) carry some bearings, but it is NOT their primary area of expertise. Motion Industries, Applied Industrial Technologies, and Kaman Industrial Technologies are in the business of selling bearings, and sell the other stuff as a sideline.

They will be able to cross reference your old bearings, and get you precisely what you need.

Just wanted to update on how this turned out...
None of the bearing vendors managed to turn up a suitable replacement bearing for this ol' girl... however, a really nice guy at Kaman Industrial gave me the number to Royal Ball Bearing. They don't normally sell unless you're buying in enormous quantity, but I guess my plea was pitiful enough for him to stuff a handful of ball bearings that fit my needs and mail 'em out. The headstock is back in one piece - now I just need to make a drive belt and fire 'er up!

Thanks for everyone's help!
