Thumb hole vs. stud vs. disc

Hole for sure. Everything Drew said.

I find my thumb occasionally slips off the stud when opening the knife rapidly. I've never used the disc, so I can't comment on that.

Thumb hole vs. stud I don't like either. I prefer using the locking mechanism on a BM Axis. You can open and close it this way and your fingers don't get in the path of the blade. I like the feel of the locking mechanism and wish it was a little larger.I am going to remove the thumb studs; they get in the way.

I think the hole is the best. Flicking a stud blade open is not consistent enough for me; it's sometimes hard to find purchase.

The best way to flick a hole is to use your thumbnail: the motion is similar to shooting a marble. Only a little wrist action is required with this method.

You can also decorate the hole if you wish. Tying colored threads around it or attaching sliver rings to it are interesting ideas.

I prefer a stud on a blade. I just can't stand blades with holes in them - to me they look awful. Good to see so many people like 'em though. There's something for everyone I guess. I sure am glad my favorites, and what I consider to be the best folders in the world, all come with studs.

Happy Trails...

I like the hole also it seems to be easier for me since my thumb is getting a little stiff. I find that the stud has to be right on to open the blade right and I have stumbled a few times with the stud after a while the thumb gets callused and it becomes easier.

I, too, like the hole, but I can't imagine any opening mechanism having more purchase than the disc. Unless, of course, the Spydy hole was a bit bigger so that the whole thumb could be inserted...

The stud. Makes a great guide for getting a good angle for sharpening (but only if it is on both sides). Lower blade profile than the humped hole. Easier to flick.

Depends on the knife...I like em' all! I wouldn't decide on a knife solely based on it's opening mech.

Okay, I'll admit I'm taking the least popular stand, but my favorite is the disc. With a little relief around it in the handle, like on the old Benchmade 970, it is for me the best, most absolutely never-fail opening method. I've had holes fail to engage my thumb on occasion, but never the disc.

Am I the only one who'd like to see a blade disc replace the thumb studs on the BM710 Axis Lock (along with an M2 blade, of course)?

I don't hate the Spydie-hole, though, far from it (Lord knows I've got enough Spydercos); I just like the disc even better.

For me, right now, I go with the hole ala Military. It facilitates a super fast draw and all of the other reasons stated before.

The Hole, hands down! Ambidextrous in most cases, unbreakable, fast.

It seems funny, but I can use all three. My favorite changes. It depends on witch knife I like at the time. So, right now it is the stud.

well i like the hole for a bunch of reasons, BUT my stryker (disc) is the fastest non auto in my inventory. just works for me and my hands- your mileage may vary.

(the second fastest is my police model with the hole, and it inst second by much)

actually i think the little thumb ramp on the scales of the striker aid my handiness with it, i find it a real aid in indexing my thumb into the proper spot.

The stud works best for me,then the hole I've never had a good disc that felt comfortable to work.
