Thumb notches?

What determines if a knife gets thumb notches? For example, why doesn't the Remote Release II have them? This is a knife designed to be used around water. If thumb notches help prevent slipping, why not put them on all models?

Thumb notcxhes were originally made for hangnails and :field expediant: filing like if you rifle got a burr,
maybe only certain knives can have them:yawn:

those are called jimping iirc. i couldn't tell you why some have them and some don't. they're not hard to put on. i did a delica with my dremel.

I wish someone from Spyderco would give us more detail. I can't imagine it's a cost thing. I can see no reason why the Remote Release II shouldn't have them.

True enough. On the other hand, I can't see any specific reason why it should have them, either. Some people like the jimping, others don't. I happen to like it on most of my knives that have it, but I don't miss it on most of the knives that don't. Who knows, the next generation of Remote Release may have it. After all, the first three generations of Delica and Endura didn't have jimping on the thumb ramp, but the fourth generation does. ;)

i like to call 'em 'ridges' :D

i'm definitely seeing a developing trend of more and more spydies getting it (noticed it too?)

i think it's good thing for most models, but some models, like the more elegant gents-knives should bette be left jimp-less ;)

I disagree. Of all the models, I think notches on the Remote Release II would be practical and most reasonable. After all, the knife was designed with water sports in mind.

I tend to favor the jimping and would like it on any knife with a ramp over the Spyderhole. It seems to me that the addend security for my thumb or forefinger when I need them for added force or control in cutting more than makes up for any supposed negatives in appearance. I would even like them in the notch on my Volpe.
