Thumbs Down On Fiber Spacers

Hate to sound stupid, but what exactly is point to spacers? Only answer I could come up with before was to add accent(the different color, etc) for aesthetic purposes. Now reading this thread as it grows, seems they can also have use to build up thin handles(this is definitely something I could find useful). Is there any other reason I'm missing?

I used them for looks only. I will continue to but not with the stuff I have been using (I think its volunized fiber spacer material). I'm going to see about getting some maple and dying or staining to preference. If I find other material that will bond with epoxy and not swell with dampness I may use it too. Rhino mentioned something about carbon fiber spacer material. I'll be open to trying that too.
