Thumg Stud or Thumb... Hole?

Well, I was browsing through the EDC thread, looking at all the pretty knives, and I developed a quandary-
Which is better, thumb stud, like in most BM, or thumb hole, like Spyders?
Personally, I like the hole better. It cuts down on weight, doesn't give it a weird bump on the blade, will never snap off, and just feels right to me.
What are your opinions on this matter?

Grr, stupid typo in the title. I cant type.

Just curious how the hole doesn't give it 'a weird bump on the blade'?

Extra material has to be added to the blade, usually resulting in a large raised area or 'bump' to make room for the hole?

That is one of the only things I dont like about the hole. The fact that the blade could be quite a bit narrower if a stud was used.

As to your question it doesnt matter for me. As long as there is something I can get purchase on with my thumb I'm happy.

Actually I guess I would say I prefer an AXIS lock (or ball bearing but I like AXIS better) which means I do not need any kind of thumb 'opener.'

Yes, you are right, I completely forgot about that. Well, I still like hole better.

The studs are better for deployment, but the holes stay out of the way when cutting certain things. I like em both.

My preference IS for thumb studs. And dual thumb studs at that, as I am very ambidextrous.

I seem to find the studs easier but I tend to prefer the hole it just seems more comfortable to me. My edc is an axis lock so I dont use the studs.

depends for me. I like knives that use both (you guessed it, im a spyderco and BM fan=P)

I find a hole to be easier to clean than getting around the base of a thumbstud after using a knife for food prep. Aside from that, it's a Ford/Chevy discussion...people prefer one over the other. That's why both sell. ;)

Spyderco models often use an exagerated blade to make room for an oversized hole. But it's purpose is more of a distinctive design characteristic than a functional necessity.

AG Russell, Ka-Bar, and Soque River all use holes or indentions successfully without adding much width to the blades.

I used to like thumbstuds more until I figured out how to use the hole, but honestly I think the best compromise of everything is a thumb disk, in terms of sheer deployment. Unfortunately thumbdisks I think have been diminishing in popularity. *sigh*

For opening a knife smoothly with my thumb, I prefer a round hole.
For flicking, I find studs to be easier.

I prefer thumbholes but thumbstuds are ok too.

My favorite folder has a thumbstud btw.

I prefer Hole opening. I like to carry tip up and to the outside of my right pocket. Disks and studs often catch on my pocket edge and slow deployment/withdrawl of the blade.

I own more knives with Spyderholes because they work easier for me. Ambi, easy to clean, simple....

Gotta go with the Spydie hole. Dremel a good crisp edge on that thing and you can flick it open all day. You can also open it with precision using thumb, pinky or ring finger in a 2-finger pinch, tip-up, tip-down, or any other manner you choose. If I get acrobatic with a blade using a thumbstud I end up running for the band-aids. Heck, I've nearly created my own martial art manipulating my Delicas, Mini-Skirmish or my Mini-AFCK's. Can't wait for the BM 745 to come out.
Now, with all that said, my EDC is a CQC-7A. Why? It's the toughest, most ergonomically perfect knife I've ever handled. I can draw a hole-opener faster but only my 7 will go through a car door (right up to the thumb disk) as a warm up exercise.

Now you see why I'm a tortured man!

I prefer thumbstuds. But my favorite EDC has a round hole. So I guess my preference is not overwhelming.
