Ive been caught in numerous bad storms. Never been caught near a visible tornado though. Last year I got caught in a storm while canoeing. I took shelter beside a boulder so that it would break the fall of trees. Trees were blowing down all around me. That was a close one. I cant imagine what a tornado would be like.

We had one go through the neighborhood behind my house. There comes a point in the storm when the wind is so strong that you wonder if the roof is going to hold. The house starts to make noise where all the cracks and windows whistle where air rushes in. From all the blue tarps in that neighborhood, other people must have heard the roofs tearing off as well. What's really scary is to see the trees that get snapped off midway up the tree. Imagine the force it takes to do that.

Never seen one. Lots of bad storms though. I missed the one in sedalia a few years back, I followed it allthe way from kansas city though. A couple people died in that one. I went to a call where a woman was outside and the trailor blew over on top of her and crushed her dead. It was amazing, there was so much golf ball sized hail on the ground, it looked like it had snowed 3 inches. every thing was covered in it. Weirdest weather Ive ever seen..

BTW I love those rings boone.....

Ive been outside a couple of times when twisters were touching down. Could not see them because of the storm. I was once close enough to hear one. I was in a boat and had to beach it in a hurry.

J Williams , they were getting close to your area last night.

I have seen several smaller tornados from a safe distance.
I was less than ten miles from this one: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/coolimg/jarrell/index.html
There is no hiding from this type of storm, it was a mile wide and even stripped asphalt off the road!!!
I was at work in a steel building, we all ran out and took shelter in the large culverts under the highway. High water be damned!

Get out of your car. Our county had 12 fatalities in an EF4 yesterday. 5 were caught in their vehicles. You can see more photos at JoplinGlobe.com or NeoshoDailyNews.com

Too close for comfort. I was at work on the ambulance for 24 hrs so I was 30 miles from home w/ my family at home alone. I was pretty worried. Glad you and yours are safe mark. Were you still camping in that madness??

We had broke camp early, around 11 am. The tornado destroyed a farm home and blew away metal barns 1/2 mile to the north of our campsite around 5:30 pm.

dang man. Good choice to break camp then. You didnt get any damage did ya? I got some limbs down up here, but thats it. We were lucky.

It can be safer in your car than exposed to the wind and debris--sometimes it's safer in the car headed away from the tornado.

Think about this: 5 out of 12 were killed in a car. And 7 out of 12 were killed *not* in a car. You have to look at the bigger picture.
