hello people,

Of the +/- 20 knives i made so far, three of them had a handle made from thuya wood. It looks great but it was hell filing and sanding the wood though. Has anyone got some advise (or tricks) on working with this material?

Don't know if I can help much Tim but I have a friend who had bad luck trying to use a super glue type finish and he settled on Tung oil. He never mentioned any shaping problems.

I'm interested in what turns out here too because I just got a bunch of beautiful Thuya burl and it is way too nice to make mistakes with.

Regards

Rob!

Thuya burl is easy to work and finishes up real nice. It does clog up sandpaper, but that is the only problem I have had.

Hi Tim!

I tried to vacuum seal it with polyurethane alkyd lacquer and with thin epoxy and both came out well. It still cloggs the sandpaper, but can be polished to a high shine. Try using the rubber belt cleaners if your grinding belts are clogged, they work very well on wood covered belts.

P.S. You should see the thuya burl i have cut up for us!
