Thuya - because it is oily - is very difficult to stabilize properly. Beware of "do-it-yourself" stabilizers. For my money, if it isn't done by WSSI, it isn't stabilized.;)

I agree with Rob, 100%. I had Mike at WSSI do some just to see what it would do. It took two years to stop weeping the oils, and never really was right to use. I use it as it is. Sand to 600 grit and buff lightly. It takes a nice shine if you don't lean on it too hard.
BTW if you want to know how it is pronounced it is - too-ya.

I had a weepy batch too Stacy. The next batch had to be right (big order). I cut the whole lot to slightly oversize blocks and put them in the kitchen oven at 175 degrees overnight. I lost nearly a quarter of them to deep checks - but the rest came out perfect. No weeping at all after stabilizing. Tough stuff to stabilize - but - oh so much class!!!!! The stabilizing worked because they went years, several times a day, in a commercial dishwasher.

Thanks guys but the stuf I am after is a lovely green / blue, this is for a friend who makes knives but has no access to a computer. He had a pair of scales before but these were suplied by the customer and he was told that they were stabalized Thuya, and this is what he would like again. Thanks for the like I will e-mail them and ask if they can get hold of it. once again many thanks.

Just a suggestion. If the scales were "a lovely green/blue", chances are 95% that they are double dyed box elder burl.

IMHO, Thuya would not look good dyed.

Green/Blue ??? I don't think so !!!
I never saw any thuya that wasn't a brown/tan.
It is soft and resinous. It smells like spice or incense when you grind it. It is full of little eyes and swirls.

I agree with the other guys, no way "thuya" is green/blue - and it does have a VERY distinctive smell - a very nice one!

I agree, too, that it seems to be hard to stabilize - I had some beautiful pieces done by WSSI, and they did weep for awhile!

Foxshot56, have your friend send you a photo and post it here of those blue green scales....eliminate the guesswork.
