Ti coated blades

I have seen a few knives on the market with exotic coatings to make the edge harder (eg: Buck IonFusion). I havn't heard much discussion about these blades and I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them.

Hi Josh,

TiNi coatings are outstanding. It aids in edge retention (while the coating is on at least one side of the bevel), is corrosion resistant, blade reflectivity is at a minimum (when black), and is practically wear resistant. It is also very hard (I've been told that SOG's coating is rated at about Rc 90).

They can come in any number of colors (I've seen samples of around 15 variations, some are very beautiful, the royal blue is my favoriate of non-black colors), though I've only seen maybe three colors on production knives.

The "luster" of the color depends on the knife finish. If the blade is polished, then coated, the result is a glossy color. If the blade is bead blasted, then coated, you get a dull, matte finish.

From what I understand, it is possibly the best knife coating on the market. Industrial drill bits use this coating for added durability and reportedly adds 5-10 times the life to the bit. It is scuff and wear resistant (which cannot be said or many other knife coatings).

Hope this helps.
