i searched, what angle to sharpen a ti lite just got one used, need a bit of tlc...i have a sharpmaker and a lansky

I've sharpened one before, thick blade for a "dagger" style, but what I used was better for metal removal, I'd say stick a 40* degree on the sucker and call it good.

They're all different. The knives don't move down an assembly line and automatically get sharpened by a machine. A person has to hold the knife and sharpen it. Therefore, the angle is going to slightly vary from one piece to the next.

light utility to open mail and cut fruit ...and sd,,,hope i never have to use it for that,

well then what would be a good angle to use and stick with 30,,40,,??? or??

That's up to you. Say it's at 30° right now, for example. You can increase that angle by putting on a microbevel (sharpen at a higher angle; the stone will directly be touching the edge), or you can decrease the angle. The latter will require cutting down the shoulders of the bevels. This will take much longer.

Of course, you can also sharpen at the same angle as the bevels.

Whatever you do is up to you. Using the same angle as it is right now will be the only way to keep the same bevels, if you're interested in that.

right but i dont know what angle it is

Magic marker trick will let you know when you're hitting it right, even if you don't end up knowing the number.

i was uning the 40,,then decided to go to to the 30..now the right side of the blade has almost no marker on it the left side does have some ,,,also i noticed the when i do a stroke on the left stone,,point side grey,,the sound is a bit rough not that smooth sound like you usually hear,,and beyond that i noticed from visual inspection it seems that the blade grind is higher on one side than the other

That's entirely possible, it's fairly seldom that a factory bevel is perfectly even from side to side. Sounds like your existing bevel is either right on or very close to thirty degrees. Something you might try is changing corners on your Sharpmaker stones, I've noticed that one of the three corners on my medium stones is noticably rougher sounding than the other two. Not entirely sure why that is.

Is the marker remaining near the edge, or near the spine? If it's on the edge, you're getting sharp just fine. If it's at the spine, you've got a fair bit of work to do, but it'll grind down with time and patience.

it seems like theres a wire edhe being formed on one side..should i stay on one side of the blade to re profile it and do alot of strokes on that one side?

Looks like you sharpened at a higher angle than the bevels. You'll have to continue grinding at that higher angle in order to sharpen the edge from now on.

I did not do that, when i was trying to sharpen after a few passes and after asking questions i discovered this,,,again i did not do this, it was like it when i recieved it,. I have contacted cold steel to ask about the angle on the blade and if its supposed to be different like that, waiting for a call back

Well the picture isn't entirely clear. I suppose it's possible that it's a burr.

When I had a Ti-Lite, it actually wasn't even sharpened properly from the factory. It had a HUGE burr off to one side. I guess I shouldn't be surprised if yours is like that, too.

One thing about AUS-8, in my experience, is that it's a huge pain in the ass to get a burr off of it. It's a soft steel, so the burr likes to hang on.

In order to get that out, you have to do one pass per side, pretty much until it comes out...

on the points or flats
