Ti Military C36TIP w/steel lockbar insert...WHERE ARE THEY??

Spyderco’s Titanium Military Model is out and smoking hot. Spyderco goes a bit further in insuring our knives are long-lasting and durable. Titanium being a soft alloy presents a challenge when making hard, strong locks because it’s soft and eventually wears. Our titanium model knives with R.I.L locking mechanisms will soon feature a new small stainless steel insert attached to the lock’s liner. The fingernail-sized addition is machined, then nested, into the titanium on both ends then held in place by three locating posts and two screws. Stainless steel being harder than titanium extends the lock’s life span by augmenting the lock-tang interface for extended smooth action and longer lock-life.

The new R.I.L. insert will be previewed on the much anticipated Knifeworks Exclusive, the CPM-M4 Military Model with a G-10 front scale and titanium rear scale R.I.L. The new R.I.L. insert will be a rolling change used on future Spyderco Ti-Mil Models in late 2010 and early 2011.

I can't find the full Ti Military's w/upgraded lockbar anywhere. Has anyone seen one yet, or know where I can buy one.

Thanks.

:)

You bolded it yourself. It's going to be in late2010 and early 2011

What is there ask? Just wait.

Hey guy....this is late 2010. If you didn't notice it's November.

And I asked if anyone has seen one, or knows where to get them. :o

There are two parts to the answer. One is Late 2010, the other is 2011. Is it 2011 yet? If not, they are not late.

Actually it says, IN late 2010 AND 2011.

Which means it will be here IN late 2010, and 2011 as well, not one or the other.;)

xtestifyx, quit playing man, I almost spit my drink on the screen. :p

EDIT: In all seriousness, I did read a post from Sal on the Spyderco board that said they were upgrading all Ti Military lockbars due to unecessary early wear caused by over-flicking. I would assume it had gone into effect immediately around the time of Taz's post, around late August/early September. It doesn't make sense that they would continue to use the original design through September, October, and November, when they are already using it on the M4/Ti version which began shipping in October.

I think the goal is to put the steel insert on the next production run of the all ti military which has not become available yet. The steel insert was unveiled on the M4 G-10/Ti Military which just arrived a few weeks ago. Supposedly this will be the new trend for Spyderco ti framelocks and we should be seeing other models arrive soon (including the all ti Military).
If you have seen pics of the new Lionsteel SR-1 folder made in Italy they also use a steel insert on their ti framelocks as well.

As far as late 2010 and early 2011 goes............the good folks from Spyderco have indicated that they don't always run on schedule for their anticipated productions.

It will be interesting to see if there is an additional cost on these models as well.

Maybe Sal or Taz will chime in with specifics.

Check with Jeff at CS. I think they just got a new shipment in, and perhaps they have the insert.

I want to get one of the new models too. There was a couple pictures of a newer model with fluting milled into the handle, it could have been anodized too, I do not recall. Does anyone have an image?

awesome, the rounded scales are already a great improvement i think, it'll probably make the TI milie lighter wich is the base concept.

fluting and anodising... hum i'll wait to have better pics to judge. i'm afraid it'll look weird.

That'll replace all my millies in my rotation. I'm so liking this change, definitely a step up in the design. If they can reduce the weight of the titanium scales by drilling artistic holes like Mayo framelocks then it'll be superb.

Imagine, if the lockbar travels too far until touching opposite scale I can always buy a replacement insert to give it new life :)

Well, someone can replace it. I would be amazed if Spyderco would let that insert out the door as a part for end-user replacement. There are too many variables that affect safe function; I think you'll have to send it in to Spyderco for replacement.

Bit difficult to ship to Spyderco considering my address :(

The insert for the SR-1 can be bought for 15 bucks each, Spyderco should follow suit.

Imagine again, some custom makers might utilize the insert and Spyderco might just create a market niche for itself selling heat treated stainless inserts. Just magining out loud.

I would guess they wouldn't and can't due to fit issues and tight tolerances. I could be wrong...

my guess is that there will be as much variance in the lockup as you can find on brand new factory framelocks. some insert on some blades will give 20% lockup, some 50 etc ...

The thing about that insert, as STR as discussed in some detail, is that its fit and therefor its various functions and the safety of the knife, depend on multiple dimensions being exactly correct. I would guess that at least for now any replacement insert would require fitting by a qualified person and that Spyderco would not want to entrust proper knife operation/lockup (and the user's safety) to the end user.
