I don't often stick my head in here, so my apologies if this has been brought up before. Recently I've been wondering about the differences between having a Ti framelock and an SS framelock. So far, I've gotten that Ti is:

  • Lighter
  • Stronger
  • Non-magnetic
  • Can be anodised
  • Won't rust

But is also

  • Softer (is wear much an issue then?)
  • Less stiff
  • More expensive

Is there anything I'm missing?

Normally SS won't rust either. The discussion really depends in part on the type of SS or Ti you are using.Weight is probably the most significant difference.

Afik titanium is not stronger, in terms of tensile strength, than most hardenable steel alloys.

I think Robert is right about weight being the only noticeable factor.

Titanium's got more "wow", and with the right tooling is easier to work, and more forgiving.

Try to remove a broken 2-56 tap from a blind hole in stainless....
