Just want to share this new knife I made with tiancode abolone scales.

I was skeptical at first but I liked how it turned out. I put a small black liner to enhance the look.

Hand polished up to 2000 grit, then hit it with pink rouge on the buffer.

Thanks for looking

You must have cut a thick piece of Abalone to get a scale for each side. I am super impressed. I love the colors from the shell. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your beautiful knife. Larry

I believe thoes scales are a very thin sheet of abalone behind a thick clear resin. If you where to look at it down on the spine you would see the scales are clear.

JT is correct this pair of scales is a thin sheet of abolone, with clear resin. They are the scales that tiancode has posted on

the exchange. Eventually I would like to try to use a thick piece of pure abolone like Frank Niro mentioned.

Thanks

Hi John,

Thank you OP for raising the topic. nice work too! We sell this stuff and it has been very popular. I received emails from buyers all the time showing me knives and other EDC items made from Jewel Abalone. (some photos are posted on this forum too) The acrylic was also being praised for its hardness and clarity. You can find more details from the product page

IMO the biggest difference between Jewel Abalone and the other resin products is the color in the same area changes based on lighting conditions and viewing angles, from green to blue, purple, and sometimes yellow. It has an entirely natural look, because the abalone sheet is natural. And even small imperfections are included. The material is mostly acrylic and is easy to work with. The price point is in the range for everyday knife making, not the art-knife range.

Jewel Abalone is semi translucent. You can add color liner to increase contrast or add color highlights. Bill Akers, another forum member, made an original design with a glow-in-the-dark liner (which we also sell) and the result was amazing.
