Tibetans inherited high-altitude gene from ancient human

This may fall under academic politics, but it is easier to get a new species name accepted for an ancient human variety than for a bird or insect. Part of the reason is the scarcity of ancient human remains, and a need to distinguish them for study purposes. Another reason is to establish the value for further research funding.

Yeah, That academic politics item is definately the big chasm in the road. I find it amazing that ANYTHING gets approved as it seems unlikely you can put 10 scientists in a room and get the majority of them to even stay in the room together forget them agreeing on anything. These days each seems to have his pet theory and anything else gets trashed because it might eventually compete for funding. Sadly it seems the days of scientists building on each others work to take a single idea and further it for humanities sake is practically gone. Today it is about enhancing their own reputation so they can get the funding to do whatever they want at the cost of every other idea. Sort of similar to the rest of society in general when I think about it.

LOL Howard, I like the comparison of the wheat ancestory to the Hapsburgs. A bit of in-breeding here and there and voilà, Wonder sandwich bread. LOL.
