Here is a photo of the custom grinder George is making . There are more photos on his forum. When he turns it on it runs so quietly compared to the other ones we have even the dog will curl up at his feet. Carol :)

I looked over several grinders before I started on this one. What I wanted was a solid, heavy duty unit with the ability to handle belt lengths from 72 to 100 inches in case I found a deal on odd length belts.

It is an all welded design with a layshaft to stack up a number of pullys for variable speed choices at a lower cost than an electronic VS unit.

The all welded design also reduces vibration and noise. This one is run by a 1 1/2 HP 220V motor.

The belt is self tensioning as well.

Yes I will be selling them either with or without a motor (Princess Auto is just a couple of blocks away). Just send me an email.

More photos on my personal forum here on Blade forums.

I really need to buy a 2x72. I'm getting tired of trying to make my 4x36 conversion work. I can't weld well enough to build my own.

Zaph there are several people out there who will say I can't weld either but I subscribe to the old adage " if some weld is good, more is better."

Gotta remember to post some welding pics tomorrow. I find that if I can no longer see the original metal, it's got to be enough weld!

Frank the wheels on it now are maple laminated for the contact wheel and the drive wheel with a steel tracking wheel. I ran it Saturday after I figured out the minor tracking problem and even without a rubber coating on the contact wheel it runs like a charm and control is exceptional.

I used wood because I wasn't sure what size the drive wheel should be and how many problems I would have with line up for tracking.

Next step is to order a 10 inch 60 durometer smooth contact wheel and replace the tracking wheel bearings (noisy).

Because it is for my own shop use I will leave the maple drive wheel on to see how much life I can get from it, I already know how long aluminum drive wheels last.

Hi George,
the new grinder looks and sounds great (saw it at the coffee night) - very little vibration. The design looks good as well, with the accommodation for quick changing of speeds and wheels.

Thanks and Regards,
Dave
