Tidioute vs. Northfield preference....??

I hear you on that. Sometimes I see a Tidioute with a set of covers AND plain bolsters I would die for with just the addition of a long pull.

I guess the SFO's are good for certain odd combinations too.

Yup. If I don't like the cover options I won't buy a knife. That goes for Northfield and Tidioute both.

...I collect bone whenever possible....

I have both Tidioute and Northfield with bone covers, and I like both very much. As stated by others above, I too generally pick a knife based on blade shapes and configurations.

[crude statement removed] But seriously, I have both Tidioute and Northfield with bone covers, and I like both very much. As stated by others above, I too generally pick a knife based on blade shapes and configurations.

Lol!! Yeah I kind of walked into that one......

I generally lean towards the slightly more refined/polished Northfields. I do like the nickel-silver bolsters and the polished blades of the Northfields. I like certain Tidioute models better - namely the TC Barlow and the 15 Boys Knife.

yep Tidioute

and Northfield

Depends on the actual knife's overall appearance. Handle options, shield, blade swedging, nail nick, bolsters, all of it. For some knives, the Tidioute versions work better for me. For others, the Northfield.

When all of the elements come together, it's hard to beat a well executed Northfield (at least in the GEC brands).

... wharncliffe lockback and a scout linerlock...frontier bone viper...I find the Tidioute to be more robust

I wonder if you are responding to handle weight, and how that affects where the balance point is on the knife? it would be interesting to know how much each knife weighs, what they look like, types of covers, number of blades.. post pics please..

My heavier knife feels most substantial, 80 grams, 2 blades, bone handles, long bolsters. Balance point is between the bolster and the cover pin.

The barehead ebony boys knife has the same #15 frame, but wood covers, same primary blade, but no secondary, smaller and lighter bolsters. Basically a northfield feature blade, on a tidioute feature frame. Balances much further forward than the bone handled knife. Feels flimsier, less robust,
weighs 49 grams, noticeably more blade heavy and light handled

the barlow bolsters add 8 grams over the short bolster on the boys knife, and the bone covers add 8 grams over wood covers, and the pen blade and its liner add 15 grams, hence the redbone knife is 31grams more substantial..

I like both, but I'll buy either based on the overall execution of the knife(s). Lately, I've been gravitating toward wood covers, but ivory bone has become a favorite as well.

I've got two new ones headed my way from Charlie (I hope).

I find for myself, that I seem to like the Tidioute just as well as the Northfield. In my pocket this morning is a Tidioute boy's knife in nifebrite acrylic and a Northfield 66 jack in rotten banana bone (I like to see more of that in the future; I hope it wasn't just an ugly accident that was originally intended to be "Yellow Rose" covers.)

If I had my druthers I'd want blades with the swedges and long pulls of the Northfields but with the duller finish of the Tidioutes.

I first choose Northfield. But generally speaking I have no strong perference one way or the other. I look at overall length, blade shape, and number of blades.
