Tim Herman....Misunderstood?

I for one had wondered about Mr. Herman as a human being and after several nites on BladeForum Chat, which can be very interesting btw, found that he is very much like the rest of us, and has problems as most people do.

I started out thinking that maybe I won't like that guy, he seems pretty coarse and a little nasty but I really do think that he has a lot going for him and everyone should lighten up on him a bit and perhaps his retorts would lessen somewhat.

Tim, you're a good guy, just misunderstood perhaps, but thanks for being around for us to pick on and thanks for all your help!

G2

Poor Tim! You`re right Gary. Tim`s been a victim of everyone picking on him! Either that or maybe he`s just reaping what he`s sewn?

Tim is a regular smark aleck midwestern guy (like I am) who just happens to be pretty down-to-earth in person, and who is a tremendous craftsman, one of the very best folder makers in the world today, and a real artisan.

Much of his sarcasm is provocative (i.e., to provoke a response) in nature by design ... just to "stir things up" amidst the inane and banal type posts that show up repetitively... e.g.:
"what is your favorite handle material"
"what is your favorite steel"
"what is your favorite folder"
"what is your favorite production blahblah"
"what is your favorite knife magazine"

Once you realize he's being a smark @$$, his posts are pretty hilarious in light of the heated responses that result. It's kind of like stepping on an ant hill ...

Think about it.

The thing is that the Whine and Cheese forum was (I think) created for Tim and his ilk but instead of playing in that "sandbox", the posts that belong there show up elsewhere. I can see that the whole point of Tim's humor targets newbies AKA FNG, and people that answer his inquiries in a "straight" manner. So simply, if restricted to his own "sandbox", Tim and others don't have fun because there isn't enough targets. C'mon, I don't think that anyone that appreciates Tim's brand of humor would disagree that the reactions of people who don't know he's kidding, is the real 'hawhaw'in Tim's humor. Even if Tim meant any actual offense, he can just dance away with the excuse of, "Can't you take a joke?" Still, Tim's Sig line doesn't have a huge disclaimer,"I'm a real joker, don't take me too seriously."----if it did it would take the 'hawhaw' out of Tim's humor. Catch-22....

Yeah, I guess Tim`s sense of humor is just too subtle and midwestern. (Right, he`s about as subtle as a midwestern gas station toiletseat.)

steve b,

again i see you being one of the first to post in a thread about me yet are one that complains the most. ya dont like my post or mmy humor yet you still jump first in line to read and post......WHY???

you strike me as the same kind ppl that b*tch about pornshops in your town and act as if ppl force you to go into them and look at nasty pics! jesus get a clue eh?? in all my years i have yet to see someone forced at gunpoint to watch dirty movies or read nasty stuff. or to read my posts!

ya just cant live without b*tching about what somebody else is diong can you?? you have my sympathy...

I don't find those kinds of posts inane nor banal. They only seem that way because we who've been around there for awhile have heard it all before. But BF has new members all the time and most will ask the same questions we asked when we first found BF. They would rather go through the interactive process than use the search function and I don't blame them.

But if you want to drive new people away from BF, just berate them and humiliate them at every chance. That's real constructive.

If you look at the gun mags, knife mags, archery mags and outdoor mags. etc, you will find that many of the same articles keep cropping up over and over, year after year. That's because they cater to the beginner as well as the "old hand." And that's the way it should be for "general" mags.

Do we need to pornificate BF? I can't imagine why. There's plenty of porn on the net. Why do we need it here? To make "knives" seem more interesting? If that's what you need to keep your interest in BF and knives going, then maybe you should start your own forum.

In contrast to some, I don't find Tim's comments interesting but pedestrian and boring. More like stuff I heard in high school and the Navy. Really "hilarious" stuff like "blow me"? Give me a break. Mayo and Hossom are not only funnier and more entertaining, but do it without being rude and crude.

One of the things I like about BF was its rules against the "rude and crude." Having spent years in the newsgroups, I saw this behavior all the time. It was boring then and it's boring now. Typical cyberspace macho. You can sit at your screen and spew out anything you want. A prepubescent wet dream.

So if Tim can say anything he wants, then I suppose we all can. Is that what you want or is Tim "special"? He seems pretty common to me, regardless of the kinds of knives he makes.

You have me all wrong, Tim! I respect other people`s right to porn or whatever floats their boat. It`s YOU I have a problem with and I`ll tell you why: As a world-class knifemaker, I`ll bet you have a whole lot of insight you could offer the knifemaking community. Bladeforums could be a great outlet for you to get together and share your expertise. Instead, you treat Bladeforums as your personal playground to spew whatever comes into your warped little mind. But worst of all, you`re a bully. I`ve seen you bully other makers right off the forums! And just like a bully, you can dish it out, but you sure can`t take it, can you? There are a million of you terrorizing junior high school playgrounds all across America.

Lastly, you`re a Moderator. You oughta know better! You know the rules here. Everyone seems to be able to abide by them but you! Hoodoo seems to have hit that nail right on the head, so I won`t repeat it here.

So, Tim, grow up. This sort of behavior is unbecoming a man of your age and stature.

Everyone should walk a mile in Tim's shoes before criticizing him. He's taken a long, difficult journey of recovery from his "accident," so let's lighten up.

(Plz see the "article" on Tim in the General forum)

Well, I don't know if Tim is "special" but I do know he was in "Special Class"

Yeah, and he's no Don Rickels.

If the truth were to be told, I think he's just bored, and comes here to have some fun....wait a minute....so do I. What a concept!

And yes, if you come to W&C, or Chat you can say things that you can't on the other forums here. Tim has loosened this place up a bit, and made it more fun in a lot of ways. If it's not your cup of tea, no problem, go post on some of the more serious threads, like "Talonite, good, bad or ugly?"

WOW! Very amazing "Steve B" input to G2's thread!

Herman's a "spewer?"

On top of that; he's got a "warped little mind?" And......"a bully!"

Man, a disher without the capabilities of receiving......

Hehehe ~ and the topper ~ ~ ~ "there are a million terrorists like Hermanator!"

It's OK with me as long has he's hammering the weak, defenseless, old junior high schoolers who play in playgrounds (across America)!

Come on damnit! Let's raise the flag! !

Besides......how do you know when age and stature becomes unbecoming behavior.......

Hate to use this corny line, "sticks and stones may break bones but relax Steve B.".......

Wow...what a bunch of extremely well thought-out responses! Almost as eloquent as Tim`s very original "blow me!"

BladeForums can be proud of this post. Yes sir. We can show every one in the world what a classy forum this is.

This reminds me of a long-ago thread about the difference between BladeForums and knife magazines like Blade. It starting to seem obvious, isn't it?
