I have kinda guessed at the answer but I'm still holding out hope for something I may have overlooked. This is my first time working with Timascus and I never heard that there is a specific side that should be finished out. So either I'm missing something or I'm a dumbass and I can save someone else from flushing $200.

Timascus is only patterned on one side, you're lock side has the pattern on the correct side the non locking side does not.

The non locking side will still color but it will be different than the locking side.

Don't scrap the non locking side, just make another set of scales to match the patterns.

Just make a new matching side for each side you already have then you will have two knives.
One knife with the show sides out and another knife with the non show side out. Once colored they will both still look fantastic. I mean whos to say you didn't try to do it that way? Keep us posted. Looks great so far! I know its expensive but you probably would have made a second knife at some point anyways.

Thanks guys. Live and learn. I will have to order another piece and have two knives finished out. Jessica from Alpha called me back last night and explained what you guys already posted and said that makers can use either side. The only problem is waiting for her husband to cook up another batch in the same thickness with the same patterning of white Timascus. She said it's a common pattern but no two pieces are ever alike. I hope they are close, though.

I decided to hit them with a torch just to see how far apart they actually are from each other. Far! The funny part is I like the more organic side (the one on the right) better.

Wow, the one on the right is amazing looking. When it's colored it looks like stone, like it was carved out of blue soapstone or something. Lovely.

Timascus does show patterns on both sides of the billet. The pattern on each side is different. Side 1 is patterned with a die. This is the side that is photographed and shown on the website. Side 2 is an organic random pattern.

About 25% of knifemakers choose to use the random pattern (side 2). The organic look appeals to many people.
