Does anyone have any info on the Timberline Hatchets, like the Bushpilot or the Canoe Hatchet? Thinking of getting one but not sure of thier quality.
Thanks in advance!

both the handles (plastic composite) are a little sharp around the fingergrooves, i believe its 440 something or other steel. i have used both a bit, the bushpilot is useful and compact and it stays in my tackle box, the canoe hatchet is heavy to say the least, i rehandled mine in g-10, softened the fingergrooves quite a bit and convexed the edge really improved the overall piece. But it depends on what your needs are too, they both can pretty much do the same things with the edge going to the canoe hatchet as far as chopping and splitting do to the extra weight and length. lastley i'll add that they do hold a decent edge.

I picked up a Bush Pilot with Cabela's points about a year ago. Not bad for the money. I've used it mostly for splitting kindling around the firepit, but the design would make it OK for bushcraft projects as well. Here's a comparison shot with a GB Mini. It does seem to hold an edge well as disduster mentioned.

i always thought these two models filled a nice nitch as a production model solid steel hatchet. i wish i saw more of them out there, they haven't got discontinued so they must sell. Also i forgot to add the sheaths are sturdy as well that come with these, thick leather with a welt. Here's a pic of my bushpilot and my modded canoe hatchet, you can really see the difference in the fingergrooves.

Those pics really help! I did'nt realize how much bigger the Canoe hatchet was from the bushpilot. I'm just looking for a good survival hatchet. I currently carry A BK7 knife which is just alittle small for alot of chopping. So I figure buy carrying a hatchet it would reduce the work load of my survival knife.

The bush pilot is an awesome hatchet. Nice leather sheath for it and it stays very sharp. Haven't tried yet, but my son thinks it would work good for skinning a deer too. A bit short though, and I can't get a good "solid" swing with it when chopping wood. . It is nice and compact though, and easy to carry on a belt. Another good hatchet is the smaller Estwing, the 14A model. It is around 11" or so long and has a good feel to it, much better than the larger one. Not so good for splitting though, too thin of a blade taper. It is great for chopping.

I love my Bush Pilot. Stays sharp. Good chopper. Not so heavy that you regret strapping it to your daypack. Great sheath. The finger grooves are a little sharp. I wear gloves if I'm using it for more than a half hour or so.
