Time for a completely new DOUBLE BLADED Spyder maybe?

Any of you who know me also know that my very favorite Spyderco EDC is the C-44 Big Dyad. I have spread the word about how great of an all purpose folder the big Dyad is and there are a select few of you who have also caught Dyad fever and have discovered the knife's great versatility.

Truly a folder with the best of both cutting worlds it sports one really nice fully serrated blade and one really streamlined, flat grind, plain edged blade. It is fairly rare when I can't complete a cutting job with one or both of the blades from my C-44 big Dyad. I have even lobbied to hopefully inspire Spyderco to bring back the Big Dyad. However I have pretty much come to the conclusion that it's not going to happen ( at least any time soon).

So with that being said I say we brainstorm and lobby for a completely new DOUBLE BLADED Spyderco folder. A new folder with one fully serrated blade and one stellar plain edged blade. To suggest a new Double Bladed folder with different blade designs, maybe a different locking system, New style clip and hopefully a nice well positioned Lanyard hole. Maybe even a special belt sheath for tradesmen.

I know I'm not alone in the desire for a new DOUBLE BLADED Spyder. What would all want in a new Double bladed Spyder?

As I posted on the Spyderco Forum...

As long as it's 100% lefty friendly, has two PE blades, double bolsters, and nice natural material scales, count me in. Otherwise, I would not be interested.

I REALLY like the idea, but I like the one plain, one all serrated. I'd like the plain blade 3.6 to 3.9" long and a less delicate tip than on the large dyad.

Do that and I'm in, regardless of handle, but g10 would be my 1st choice.

I like it, but would like it to be one plain, one serrated and jigged one or something like that, no pocket clip.

Personally I'd like a lefty freindly version (at least don't block the hole with the blades). A nice clip or drop point plain blade and a sheepfoot serrated is a great combo IMO, and although I haven't used the dyad, I don't see how you could improve on the double lockback.

Basically, the only way I'd consider something like that would be if it was lefty-opening freindly and had a pocket clip and overall blade lengths at or under 3 inches.

Well Ed I am with you on the possibility of a big Dyad with a G-10 handle. I would also love a Peel Ply CF handle as well.

If they stayed with a Micarta handle which I do like by the way I wish they would make one with a more GRIPPY surface to it

I sure am hearing from a lot of leftys on both Forums. That's really interesting that I would get that much attention from you "south paws". I would think that should be a fairly easy thing to engineer into a new double bladed knife. I would also like it to where you could locate the clip in 4 different places just like the Manix and a few other models. I would even love to see them put an advanced clip on it. thanks for all the input guys. Let's don't quit now. Hopefully we'll get their attention :)

From my post on the Spyderco forum:

Mmm... I'd say a complete overhaul of the Dyad would be in order.

First of all, a comp lock, so that the blades will obscure the opening holes as little as possible (or preferably not at all). That'll require dual liners, although it might be possible to just have a single liner (so right handers will have as much trouble as lefties ), but I don't know how that will work, strength wise.

Second, I'd personally like it big enough that the opening hole forms part of the handle when the other blade is open.

Blade length or type can vary, so I've just left both of them as long PE blades. Personally though, I'd prefer at least one Wharncliffe in there.

Admittedly, it's still pretty ugly (30 mins work?), but here's a concept drawing and rendering.

One gripe that I have heard is that if you grip really hard while using the Dyad, the blade that is still closed digs into your hand. If Sal and crew could come up with some way to alleviate that, it might help out. It doesn't bother me, but I'm not a "hard use" kinda guy :)

I don't care what it's made of, I'll buy a few. Oh, and the wait for the Micro Dyad is killing me!:grumpy:

Well CG I've never experienced it to that degree but I can see where you are coming from and I can see how that would happen in a stressful, hard use situation. I'm sure that the spine of the blades could be machined in a way to where that wouldn't be a problem.

But that's what this is meant to be is a sounding board for those who have experienced problems with the big Dyad. I do think we will probably have consensus in regards to the blades being nestled in a comfortable setting. It is important what you bring up because the knife is intended to be used with one blade opened and one blade closed for obvious safety reasons.

take a look for a small schrade avatar-
its a 2 blade liner lock with spyder type holes-one plain one serrated

will give you guys a basic idea -i can also open and close with bolth hands with ease,so its a lefty friendly style-

i would love one made with a natural handle and not a machined metal one-

Double Dodo!

I like two blade concept too, while my idea is not as organized and well thought out as yours I am putting my name down in supporting push for another two blades Spydie.

You know while we are on the subject of the Dyad and how neat it would be for Spyderco to come out with a new double bladed model I have been thinking about another blade love. Yes I am going to bring up the idea of a dual bladed Hawkbill..

Among many Hawkbill users such as myself I share information from time to time about Hawkbills and their uses. I find that there are many Hawkbill enthusiasts that tend to like fully serrated and plain edged Hawkbills both. I see that even among people who as a general rule don't like serrated blades much but in spite of that they do like Hawkbills for what ever reason.

Something along the line as maybe a double bladed Hawkbill that would either use Harpy type blades or Spyderhawk type blades. This is probably a topic all by itself but I thought that I would see who else would be intrigued by such a possibility.

My ideal double bladed Spyderco

-One 3 inch PE Wharncliffe blade( like the Cento 4)

-One 3 inch PE Belly blade (like the Caly III)

-Lock back (it's the one I trust the most to stay closed.)

-nice looking jigged bone scales

-Vg-10 or H-1 steel.

That's a pretty solid suggestion Axlis :) Not exactly what I would have picked but well thought out just the same. ;)

It really seems kind of strange that some of Spyderco's classics have to be discontinued for a while before people actually take them seriously. The Dyads were not a very well liked or received when they were in the line up during 2000-2001. But now that they are more understood it just seems to make sense to me that the timing would be great for a new Double Bladed Spyder. However maybe I am jumping the gun just a bit suggesting one. But it is truly something worth while to consider. :)
