Recommendation? Time For a New EDC

I have been thinking of getting a new EDC lately, no real need other than wanting to try something new. My current EDC for the past few years has been a Buck Mayo TNT collab I picked up on the second hand market. Great knife, does everything I need just fine, but like I said just looking to make a change and give myself an excuse to buy a new knife.

I work in an office environment, so am a bit limited to folders. Some examples of things I have carried in the past are a custom Emerson Commander, Queen Canoe in D2, Benchmade Benchmite, Case Peanut (yellow CV of course). Those are just the ones I carried regularly for a decent period of time, of course have thrown others into my pocket on random occasions. I also have a bit of a odd situation in that at least twice I week I am at a client office and need to be dressed "fancy" (slacks and a shirt with a collar) and other days I am in my office wear just jeans and a t shirt. I found very quickly that larger tactical knives (i.e. Emerson) don't work that well in Dockers.

In terms of requirements probably looking for something with ~3" blade, probably prefer something in stainless just to make maintenance a bit easier (i.e. I can be lazy). If a pocket clip I am thinking deep carry, or no clip and something I can just put into my pocket and not worry about too much. No need for an fidget friendly features, don't plan to be playing with a knife while sitting at my desk (not that anyone would really care). In terms of budget just to keep things interesting lets say pretty big ( < $1k). I am open to factory, custom, and don't need to spend it all, just looking for something different and kind of out of my usual list of makers to keep it interesting. Biggest thing for me on this is something that I can use and carry on a daily basis without worry, and for me it isn't price that makes we concerned about using a knife but usability and how it will take wear and tear. As an example I have some really great and fancy "dress" knives with fancy scales of MOP and the like, but just feel that tossing them into a pocket with my keys will destroy them. I have no problem tossing a custom Emerson, Mayo, DDR etc. into my pocket (and have many times) because they tend to be more geared toward being used and carried in that kind of environment.

Realistically use will be mostly opening boxes and such. But am in IT so have used to cut nasty zip ties a former colleague used on EVERYTHING, and extracting stuck cables on the odd occasion.

And before it comes up I have a small Sebenza, and have carried a large as an EDC previously, nothing against it at all, but just isn't something new to me.

Thanks in advance.

Marble's GI Jack knife. Well within your price range.

I'll go thirds on the spider monkey recommendation. I prefer the copper one, but got the cf (with green liners) for work because I needed something lightweight.

Honestly, if I found myself routinely cutting zipties, I'd probably keep a small pair of wire cutters in my pocket (vs the tool kit in my pack). I don't, so I carry a 5" knipex cobra - yeah, people think it's weird; but I use them more than I expected.

Nicely done request thread, OP! Really thorough and your requirements are interesting. :)

I'd go with a Hinderer XM-18 3.0. Should go great in both environments/types of pants, it's slimmer and slicier than a regular XM-18 (not to mention shorter, of course), but it's still a robust, flawless, easily customizable Hinderer.

I tend to like ~3.5" and larger blades, and I was downright shocked how much I like my DLT no-choil slicer. I carried it exclusively for a month and never once wished I was carrying something larger. I wear a size L glove and can get a comfortable four-finger grip, too. This one has me giving a good 4-5 other knives in my collection the side-eye, because I think it's going to replace a few of them.

How about some "old school"?

How about a Barlow?

Everybody needs a Barlow in their life. Sort of like everybody needs a 3 blade Stockman.
Indeed! Or a Muskrat or such. We should all endeavor to pay homage to the time honored patterns.

No harm in adding some modern day touches though. I've always meant to grab one of these Spyderco Swayback jack pieces but never have yet.
