Time for a new Folder

So I've had my SOG Flash II for a while now... well until it turned up missing  so it's time for a new folder.

For $50 I used the hell out of it from cutting rope to marking steel for cutting. I use the knife dailyand use it for a LOT of tasks ranging from cutting to ripping staples out of boxes.

Now I originally was going to just buy another Flash II but thought I'd ask around to see if I could come up with a nicer blade that wuoldn't dent as much as the AUS8 steel on the Flash II.

I've seen some microtechs in D2 and some others in A2 but they were over $300.

Does anyone make a $110 or less folder with A2, D2 or another harder steel?

Try a Kabar Dozier or a Thorn in D2... about $60ish I believe..

There's always the BM710 in D2 as well.. around your budget..

I haven't seen the Kabar Dozier in D2, and those knives are 'cheapy' plastic looking.. are they not? Not much room on the back for thumb pressure like the SOG FLASH II I have now eithr :-/
Edit: found the Dozier in D2 here: http://www.knivesplus.com/ka-bar-dozier-knife-ka-4059.html looks cheapy still, and not that good of a GRIP for had cuts. :(

The Thorn is in D2 but not really the style of knife I need. Wow the price on that Thorn is amazingly cheap! $60 only from here to bad not style I want.

Thank you very much though! keep the list of D2/A2 foldrs coming.

You can try a Queen Mountainman in D2 from cumberlandknifeworks, look under Bird's Eye Maple or BEM when you choose Queen products from the catalogue.

They have a couple of other blades in D2 as well though not all have a lock..

It's kind of different from what you are carrying, but you could order a Buck 110 with a BG42 blade for about $85. A lot of folks think well of BG42.

The Cabela's D2 minigrip and grip are about 75 dollars and work well. The 710 does not look cheap (to me) at all, despite its mostly smooth G10 scales. The 710 is almost definingly a confidence inspiring knife...probably one of the toughest knives being made....it's too big for me, but I have a lot of respect for it. If you can carry a huge knife, and need the toughness, it's the obvious recommendation.

As some have mentioned, the KaBar/dozier thorn is a pretty cool knife, I think it's about 90 dollars, and of course, is D2.

There are quite a few choices in the Benchmade bali-song area with D2. The 41MC/SS and 32 morpho off the top of my head, all will take on some hardcore challenges, and everyone needs at least one Benchmade balisong...it's a little more expensive than you're looking for though, the Morpho can be had for 140 if you look around a lot, but the 41s are out of production and can cost quite a bit.

But a really great option (I would NOT use this blade through staples...this thing is a slicing machine) is the 960. It may be the best slicer in Benchmade's lineup (the Morpho makes a pretty strong case from my personal collection, but I haven't tested a switchback or a few others that might perform well--of course, these aren't in D2) and is in D2. I think you can find them for 130 dollars. These aren't super tough mega tactical knives though...very thin blade.

You know, for the staple type of duty, AUS8 might be an ideal steel for you. Very chip resistant in my experience. But then, so is D2...

Looks like the D2 Cabela's grip is going to be the best bet in your price range. But having owned one of those and a 960, the 960 just blows it out of the water.

I ended up getting the cabelas griptilian, and the bechmnade 960 looks awesome just worried about the thin (.100) blade. I think the Griptillian will serve me nciely, and if not the FlashII is only $48 from amazon so not much to replace what I had and have 2 knives ;)

Thanks guys!

Todd there is a Flash II for sale with metal handles in the exchange forum on this site. I looked at it and may get it. It is on page 5 or 6, and the guy wants $50 shipped....I am still on the fence about getting it so if you bet me too it that is fine.....

i would rather have a skirmish for a few dollars more-nothing wrong with s30v
and the ti framelock is nice

As many have said, the 710 is a great knife, one of Benchmade's staples. It doesn't come up in many tank discussions, but it's more than worthy of the designation. Be careful though, this knife defies its dimensions and is BIG in real life. Definitely see in RL before buying.

I totally agree... the handle fills your hand and the blade sticks out like a small pocket sword... really big and long (mm, I'm allowed to say that here right...:D

The 710 is big. The blade is a hair shorter than my Spydie Military, maybe 1/16" shorter, and the handle is 1/2" shorter. They seem to be about the same thickness, which in both cases is quite flat. With the 710's full metal liners, it is noticeably heavier, but certainly not the heaviest folder I own.

It's a real classic, well worth adding to the collection as a heavy user.

Under 60 from Tomars kabars. I just got mine (i'm in australia - customs inspected it but its legal) in the mail.

Its surprisingly sharp! I was cutting a cardboard box full of spring water - It zipped through the cardboard side like a hotknife through butter and then i noticed water seeping out. Oh crap - it'd gone through both cardboard and the bottles without me even noticing. I recommend this as an EDC - for light duty - not for prying please. 60 bucks for a dozier designed D2 blade - its a no-brainer for me.
