Whether made from fine grained black flint or, in this case, 52100 steel the classic curve of a skinning knifes edge is both effective and aesthetic.

I agree. Skinners are my favorite knife style. Very beautiful blade Fred.

Very nice blade Fred. Am I seeing correctly that you file a shoulder on all 4 sides at the rear of the ricasso?

Very nice work. Just my experience skinning and working deer. A narrower point is very helpful getting into joints to cut loose tendons and ligaments. It is also easier to control when slitting the hide to begin the skinning, without puncturing the innards, using it edge up. Just my opinion. Everyone has their own preferences.

I just figured out how to use the multi quote feature:confused: How slow am I?:jerkit:

The shoulder is cut on all four sides. I have a foot wide metal holding device, that clamps in a vise, it allows me to cut all four sides in one set up. I drive the guards on after fitting them This makes for a super fit at the blade/guard junction.

Neither of the blades pictured would be my first choice if I were field dressing a deer. I carry two knives when deer hunting, one to bone with, the other to skin. I like to use the blade style pictured to make the cut from crotch to neck; there's more to get between your fingers.

I live in white tail country, and it is amazing the different styles of knives that hunters favor to go into the field with.
More than anything else, give me a sharp knife.

Good hunting, Fred

More than anything else, give me a sharp knife to take.

Good hunting, Fred

Growing up in Ohio, I can attest to it being whitetail country! I've taken many deer around Seneca Lake and Salt Fork. Growing up, my parents had a cottage on Seneca Lake. What a great place for a kid to grow up.

p.s.
Nice blade shape. I like it a lot!

That is beautiful country. I've fished the area a lot. Plugging for bass.

I've lived a lot of places in my life, but, theres nothing, quite like hunting the oak ridges, in the fall, looking for rubs and scrapes here in s/e Ohio.

Fred,
Maybe it's just people from Ohio in general that are slow, because I can't figure out how to use the SINGLE quote feature!!! I even wrote to the mods for help and got no response. Gotta love Ohio deer hunting:thumbup:
I was on a bowhunt once in Alberta and the guide got mad that I passed up a buck in the 140" range. I told him I wouldn't even shoot that buck in my backyard! He asked, "Where are you from again?" I told him and he just said "OH":D

Like those skinner designs. Where are you from mdoyle? I just got into bowhunting, can't wait for this next season.

Click the multi quote button on each post you want to answer then drop to the bottom and click on reply. They will all come up in the same box. Fred
