Looking at H&K pistols, the new P30 .40 cal specifically. Anyone shoot one yet? Where to get a holster made? The nastiest legal .40 rounds? It's that or a USP compact .40 cal. I decided on .40 over 9mm and .45 due to clip capacity and "splitting the difference".

my $0.02:

handle (and if possible, fire off) a whole bunch of different firearms and choose the one that's most comfortable for YOU.

...not really an HK fan, but if it fits you, it fits you! Best ammo on the market right now, in my opinion is the Federal HST....best concealed holsters you're going to find without a 6 month wait would be Comp Tac....If you're looking for uber high cap, you can pack 19+1 with an XDm 9mm and the FN 5.7 carries 20-something..

This is what I carry, can't say enough how pleased I am with it's performance.

Smith & Wesson M&P Compact .40

I carry either a springfield 1911 or a glock 19. the glock in an IWB c hook raven concealment and I carry the 1911 in a leather IWB holster. I would carry the 1911 in a raven but they are expensive and take a while to get. However, you won't find a better holster with more carry options then a raven concealment

Oh I'm definitely aware of the 5.7 20 round capacity but I held one and it's a HUGE chunk of plastic. Mind you I'm 5"11 165 lbs so I can conceal smaller - medium frame guns but anything large and it's obvious I am carrying.

So we got comp tac for a holster and Federal HST ammo. I'll be looking into them, thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

Yeah sambo I've held tons of guns over the past year. Just been saving for knives/guns the past 3 months and I've bought quite a few knives. So now it's time to get the gun.

It appears I got a great deal and am in the process of buying a lightly used P30 H&K 9mm. I'll try it out and probably trade it for a .40 cal or sell it at some point. Either way I'll grab my permit with this gun.

i recommend you go glock 19 for cc. 15+1 capacity. and if you roll federals 9mm +p+, your ballistics will be that of a 357 sig round. desantis scorpion for a holster. ive shot the hk p 30, its what it is another squeeshy triggered, hammer fired dinosaur. striker fired handguns is the way too go.

I had a glock, really not a fan. I can't shoot very well with them, well in comparison to say a Dan Wesson 1911.

remember your not trying to take out the death star, if you can put all your shots center mass at 7 yards, your good to go. and if you put any handgun in a vise and pull the trigger all the shots will go threw one hole and that includes a glock, its the human factor that makes you believe the handgun is inaccurate.

Very true, but in the end in my opinion you should stick with the types of guns you shoot best with. That and the ones that carry best with your frame. But yeah 7 yards I'm fine with a glock it's 20+ I tend to miss a few. It's probably more or less I light tight groups not a wider grouping which is what I shoot with glocks.

20 plus man, im outa there, with the quickness. but your right ultimately its what you shoot best. also remember though, 5 shots in one hole, its still one hole.

I carried 1911's for years and switched to Glocks about 7 years ago. Not because I don't like 1911's. I do. They have been, and always will be my favorite pistol.

If you want something that you don't have to worry much about, I would go with the Glock. Great reliability, very accurate (if you can shoot well), very durable too.
Plus you don't have to worry about rust. If you are going to be carrying IWB, thats something to think about.

The Glocks are very easy to work on too. There are a lot of people that say they can work on 1911's ,but there are a lot of them floating around out there that have been ruined or are unreliable because someone that thought they knew what they were doing...
Any time I'm working on a 1911, I go into the garage where there are no distractions.

However, basic cleaning on 1911's is very easy

Find what you are comfortable with, and put a lot of rounds through it before you start carrying to make sure there are no issues. Use the ammo that you plan on carrying for practice to make sure there are no reliability issues. Its not cheap, but the whole reason to carry is to save your life or someone else. You can't put a price on that.

Just my opinion but don't get to worried about carrying something that has 20 rounds in it. I only carry 45 acp. I like the big heavy bullets. If I can't remedy a bad situation with 8 rounds of premium 45 acp bullets, its time to rethink the situation.

If you have never carried before, spend a lot of time practicing presentation.
It probably sounds stupid, but that is very critical, especially if you are carrying IWB.

Yeah I voted down on EDC 1911 Because of the weight, they are almost 3 pounds Vs. a polymer 1.7 pounds.

Except for the 'reduced recoil' loads any 40 will perform well the best being the Corbon DPX ! I'm a great fan of the 40 ever since it first came out.

also check out kahr arms . i have a cw40 and love it. from what i have read its thinner and weights less then a glock sub compact. and when carrying it iwb i barely noticed its there!

and on the ammo recommendation look for winchester ranger t-series !!! and federal hst.
speer gold dot. and remington golden saber. all four of these are top of the line ammo but just keep in mind the gold dot's and golden sabers are more available then the ranger and the hst ammo

The USP compact is a great gun, i have one in 9mm. Is shoots well and reliability is second to none. But you should buy the one that fits YOU.

I have fired a Springfield Armory 1911 and a HK USP 45. I would go with the USP. Almost twice the capacity, many options for trigger/safety config as far as DAO and DA on first shot, plus a decocker.

If you get a 9mm, I would keep it. Ammo availability has been slightly better for 9mm than for the other calibers, at least in my neck of the woods. I have been able to replace my JHP and ball ammo for the 9mm on a 1 for 1 basis, and for my other firearms it has been a struggle. Some places will only sell a box of 40 or 45 to you at a time. Plus, I am dubious as to the perceived improved performance of a 40 over a 9mm. Training and shot placement are more important once you have chosen a proven combat caliber. Take the money you save and buy more practice ammo! Good luck.
