Well, it has been a rough few weeks in America, and the Emerson forum was darkened with some "bad karma, dude" this week, so I this is my pathetic little attempt to lighten the mood a bit.

Today I started thinking about this forum. It should be no surprise that cops and military type people grace us with their presence here, but we also have an angora goat farmer, a producer, and a pastry chef who are Emerson fans and frequent the forum. I am drawing a blank on what some of the other Suspects do.

Anyway, time to spill what you do. Not that cops like John and I aren't cool, REALLY cool  , but I want to hear about other careers that you would not really associate with being into knives. (If you are a male stripper, don't tell me where you carry your knife, I really don't want to know!)

I'm unemployed! Fascinating huh? ;) Right now I mostly spend my days stabbing myself in the hand (by accident) with a certain knife that I won't mention for legal reasons. ;)

Scott,

I split my time between being a Technical Designer on big scale networks/systems and the British Army Reserves (currently ranked as Captain). I am also a benefactor for serveral well known knfe makers & dealers...... :D

Regards,

Ed
Usual Suspect

I am a producer. I work for a NYC ad agency producing television commercials for a certain telecom company. I never have occassion to use a knife during the course of my job. So how did I end up with all these knives?:D

Hi
I deal with lots of fresh chilled food products (caviar, smoked salmon, foie gras, French seafood, poultry etc), dairy products, condiments and chocolate and pastry products, pasta....all ingredients that any 5 to 6 star hotels/retsurants need on a daily basis. I work with imported food products mostly from France, Italy and Switzerland. My clients are Chefs and Food & Beverage Managers. You will be surprised how little they know about the fine cutlery like the ones we collect :). Although I once gave a Spyderco Endura to a former Chef of the Pierre on the Park,NYC.... he loved that one!

I enjoy good Californian, Chilean and Australian red wines altough most often, I have a cold glass of Gin & Tonic with a twist of lemon at sundown :D I dont go out of my way to look for French wines..just my preference! Oh! I almost forgot...sometimes I do get to eat some of that fine food :p

Warmest wishes,

Oliver

OK, I'll bore you all.

I'm a Street Cop here in the UK and also a Medic on one of our tac. units. So I get to play with knives for a living, how cool is that ! :D

I have worked as a Police Officer for the last 16 years. Most of this time has been spent in patrol but did work for a year in the narcotics/Vice unit where i work now. I also own a small gun and knife business.

I am currently un-employed, but for the last 25yrs I worked as
the chief pistol tester for a large firearms manufacturer until they signed a contract with willy clinton, and their business nosedived.
I was also in charge of the laser etching dept. After losing my job the Government decided I was unmarketable with my old skills so they're now sending me to school to become a computer nerd.

Laserman1,
Computer nerd isn't so bad if you don't mind sitting in front of a screen for 5 to 8 hours a day. Thats what I do for the Community College out here. You going to learn Novell, MCSE, A+, or CISCO? A lot of the techs out here are gun and knife nuts, but I think I get the award for being a little on the extreme side.
Good luck,
Reed

I'm pretty strange for my profession. I am a graduate teaching assistant working towards my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I'm a poet.

My Early English Lit. Students were a little surprised when I pulled out my Emerson to make a point about Anglo-Saxon cultural knives when discussing Beowulf. I could tell that had never happened to them before.

Ark, from that picture you posted awhile ago, producer would have never, NEVER entered my head. :D

I'm an architect (well, not legally, yet - I still need to take the 9-part licensing exam, which'll start next year. Right now I'm billed out as a "Designer"). I spent 8 years in what was essentially night school to get my BArch, working full time in a firm during the day. I've worked in two firms during my school career. The first was Benjamin Thompson & Associates. They're known for, among other things, Faneuil Hall Marketplace here in Boston; Fulton Market, Pier 17 and pedestrian amenities (signage, bus stops, etc.) around Grand Central Station in NYC; Post Office Square and the refurbishment of Union Station in Washington, DC; Harborplace in Baltimore; Bayside in Miami; Broward Performing Arts Center in Ft. Lauderdale; Navy Pier in Chicago; Custom House Docks in Dublin; a masterplan of Cardiff's Inner Harbour; a couple of hotels in Egypt... and some other stuff.

IN '86, three architects at BTA broke off to start their own firm. I left BTA in '97 to go work for them, and have been there ever since.

LOL - hope the schpiel wasn't TOO boring. But, to quote Bugs Bunny, "you ASKED for it." :D

Well, I'm currently unemployed as well. Until 8/31, I was a computer nerd. :D Implementation Manager for an Occupational Safety & Health Management ASP (Application Service Provider) called Safetylogic.com. I set up all of our clients on our web application, and then trained the administrators at each company. Since the company is owned by Aon Corporation (floors 98-100 of WTC2 :( ), and their HQ is in Chicago, they decided to "consolidate operations" in the Chicagoland area, and pretty much laid everyone off.

I was lucky to be selected to work on the transition team, and helped get the company moved to Glenview, IL, and hire/train a new staff. I had to spend all summer in Chicago, which wasn't ALL bad...got to check out the Navy Pier, See2...Chicago's a pretty cool city, as far as architechture is concerned!

Now I spend most days job searching, to no avail. :(

Firefighter/emt.On a crew made up of of 100% blade carriers, some more than 1;) . When something needs to be cut on a job, watch out!theres a lot of blades snap'n open.:D

I recently lost my full time job also. Hmmmm are we seeing a trend with the Suspects here????

I was doing something I absolutely hated but made some good money. Just before the place closed down I was asked to become a instructor for Options for Personal Security. Here is their website: http://www.optionsforpersonalsecurity.com/
No pic of me there yet but they're working on it.

I also decided to take the severance pay and go back to school. So I am currently a full time student with about one more semester to go to get my Associates in Criminal Justice.

The borough that I live in has a couple positions open in the Police department and I just put my application in. They start the testing process at the end of this month. Hmmmmmm is there another trend I'm seeing with the Suspects here again?

Other than that I'm just a full time regular Usual Suspect that fights with bouts of perevertedness :D

Hey guys, its very interesting to find out a little more about the 'Suspects'!

Been a Constable with a Northern Canadian police service for the last 10 years, working for the most part in patrol (with short stints in other specialized units). Prior to Law Enforcement, I was in the Sales/Marketing field and sold everything from men's clothing to business machines for one of the larger copier manufacturers.

I just wanted to reiterate something I posted in another thread. I consider myself to be in "good" company, and thank all of you for teaching me more about EKI and knives in general.

I have spent my career as a Process Engineer helping to design systems to prepare foods in mass quantities for most of the major US Food Companies.

I was laid off about 1 1/2 years ago from the same company that Ross T. used to work for... I am now part of an Engineering Company that provides Design and Project Management services on a contract basis. You can find my picture and bio at www.foodsys.com.

I work in a machine shop.
I always say that you can tell you are a blue collar worker if you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom.

I am also a student, a physics major.
