Time to switch! Have a few questions

Wow, those a fine old pieces. Just PM or e-mail me and I'll send you some blades to try.

That's what I'm talking about. An old fat tech beater. You'll love it.

That ball handled tech is the travel tech. You may find that the handle is shorter than you like for everyday use. I just made a longer handle for one of my travel techs, yesterday, from hexagonal brass rod. I turned it up on the lathe and turned about 12 grooves in it for grip.
If I can remember how to post pics, I'll snap a few and post them here. I also made a longer handle from the same material for my Gem 1912 travel razor.

I think you'll like using that fat handled tech and the superspeed. I've used mine with Derby Extra blades and they make for a good, cheap, smooth shave.

The Shaving Factory sells boxes of 100 Derby blades for 9.99 plus about 2 or 3 bucks shipping on Ebay.

I think I'll also make some handles from black Delrin plastic rod.

I figured that it was a travel razor since... well... it came in a travel pouch. It is in such pristine condition that for $2, I just couldn't pass it up. I am a bit reluctant to use it, though. It looks like it has never been used.

I'm looking forward to trying it. I now have 4 with the two, plus my 1976 W-1 Super Speed I picked up this week, and my 1973 Super Slim Adjustable arrived today. Other than the travel tech, none of them are anything special to look at, but I figure I can start with these as long as they work mechanically, and save up the money to get one in awesome condition.

Oh, the fat handle tech cleaned up pretty well:

I don't blame you at all for picking up that travel tech. You didn't get hurt at all on that deal. Nothing wrong with the travel techs, I own 3. I need to get around to making some more tech handles.
I have a fat handled tech like yours, only mine's not the gold one.
With a good sharp blade, it's a great razor.
I have a black handled 1969 super adjustable, like your '76. It's my favorite razor. It just gives a great shave. I know I should like my silver handled '62 slim adjustable better, but the black super just shaves me so well, and Derby blades really seem to bring out the best in it.
That super speed is a great razor, too. I have a silver handled flare tip ss and I love it. There's not a bad razor in that bunch, assuming all are mechanically sound.

I think you're getting addicted to safety razors. It's ok. You're among friends. I started with none on March 1, of this year. I now have about 18, not including my cartridge razors.
Yes, it will end up like your guns and knives. Except that the razors cost less/take up less space, and DE blades are much cheaper than ammo.

Just wait till you try your first Gem single edge razor with Gem/Pal/Treet SE blades. Talk about a long lasting, smooth shave.

You had to go and say that, didn't you? One of the antique stores in town has 2 of them. One a Gem of some sort, and the other a Gem Micro-something. $6 each. Not pristine condition, but not bad.

If'n I'm gonna go single edge, should I pick up the Schick Injector that is nice and shiny with only a few scratches on it, in a very good condition box with the tannish bakelite handle for $20?

Gollnick,

The blades arrived yesterday. Thank you! I'm looking forward to trying these once I get my brush and soaps.

Glad that got to you. I hope it will help you acheive a good shave.

Holy Cow guys!

Kohai999, that's incredibly generous. However, I wouldn't feel right taking a razor from you when I just won 3 auctions on eBay for some that should be here by the end of the week (one a 1960 Super Speed Flair Tip), and I picked up two at a flea market yesterday. One is pre-1951 (no idea what model) and quite dirty, and I need to do a lot of cleanup on it; the other is a small 1964 travel razor that is so pristine, I'm not sure it's even been used (bought it for $2!!!). I may have to keep it that way.

Gollnick, thank you very much! I think I'll need to take you up on your offer, as I have no idea what to look for in blades. Having a few to try out will be a big help.

Here are the two I picked up:

The green gunk scrapes off in the low spots with my fingernail, but I'm not sure what to use to get it off completely.

Get some scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner and an old toothbrush. Spray the scrubbing bubbles on a few times and just let it set for a few minutes then break out the toothbrush. It will take that green stuff right off!

Yep. Post #24 above has the cleaned up pic. I used some washing soda (sodium carbonate) in water to clean it up.

That injector looks pretty nice. It even comes in the case and with a blade pack.
I find the injectors a bit aggressive for an everyday shaver for my face. However, they do give a good shave. It's just my very limited experience. Yours may differ. Shaving with an Injector is kind of like shaving with a Bic disposable, based on blade angle and razor weight. They have a lot of fans in the wet shaving world, I'm finding out. That's a nice one to have for the collection. I have 2 Schick injectors like that one and one Pal injector.
If it were me, I'd snag that injector while it's available.
The Gems are probably a Gem 1912 or some variation of it, and a Gem Micromatic. I have a bullet tip Gem Micromatic and absolutely love it. It's a very aggressive shaver. I go slower with it and am rewarded with a fantastic shave. The angle is different from a DE, as is an Injector, but that's to be expected. The smoothest shaves I've ever gotten have been with my Micromatic.\
I only get 3 fantastic shaves from a blade, before they start to irritate my face. However, 10 blades for 5 bucks at Rite Aid is 30 shaves for 5 bucks. That's about 17 cents per shave. Much cheaper than my experiences with the Fusion. The Fusion gave me 3 great shaves, although resulting in zits, bumps, and ingrown hairs, per cartridge.
At 25 to 32 bucks for 8 carts, the Fusion is terrible.
