Time to your door

I got an email and got over excited again yesterday. No knives on the way but my handles were supposed to be months out and there already coming. Bonus: mommas 4.1 handles are coming too.

There was a big stack that went out this past Mon/Tue. I'm not sure how many will go out until I am back in town in Sept. I usually do the final QC so Guy can stay focused on sharpening. But I can do a lot of shipping labels in a short period of time so the day I get back will definitely be a happy one for you folks.

Part of why these are taking some time is because the GSO-3.5 and GSO-4.1s just before them were really hard to sharpen. Some knives even got scrapped halfway through the process. We weren't able to get the head start we were planning for with the GSO-5s. That won't be the case with the GSO-5.1s.

No. I too am growing a bit concerned also. I placed my GSO 5 order on the 30th of April and still waiting for it to be shipped.

I can understand where you are coming from, but I think that the problem is that your expectations are too high.

S!K is a craft manufacturing business run by two people with VERY HIGH QC standards. I would be willing to bet that S!K significantly exceeds the QC standards of every large scale knife manufacturer out there, and that there are very few custom manufacturers that make knives of similar quality. However, S!K is not perfect. They are terrible at forecasting lead times and consistently take A LOT longer than they predict to deliver knives. This is no secret. When you order a S!K, you know you are going to be in for a LONG wait, and that said wait will inevitably be MUCH LONGER than what Guy and Ellie tell you. S!K is a young company and they are learning as they go. That is just the way it is, and you have to understand that going in or you are going to be very disappointed.

I have ZERO doubt that S!K is going to deliver my GSO5 (ordered May 1). When I get it, it will be AMAZING. I also have no hard feelings towards Guy and Ellie, and don't think that they are being intentionally deceptive about delivery dates. To the contrary, they have been incredibly transparent and always let us know when dates are pushed forward. I think that their delivery forecasting skills could definitely use some work, but when put in the context of the rest of the industry and the quality of the S!K product, I am not that concerned about their inability to meet their target dates.

This is just my opinion. I really like S!K and the product they make. I 100% believe Guy and Ellie are good people that will deliver on their commitments, and to me the wait is more than worth it. YMMV.

Cheers!

It is true. We have not done well with forecasting in the past. There is the timeframe we are told in the beginning, what we think it will be, and then what it actually is. That is why with the preorders we have tried to be very clear about "No guaranteed delivery date." Instead we are just doing everything we can think of to keep people informed about what is going on.

The GSO-5.1 run is going smoothly and we have every reason to believe future runs will go even better.

My feeling is that if you are not able to accept a variable delivery, then do not participate in S!K preorders. Wait for them to be in stock and pay full retail. Ellie and Guy have been doing a remarkable job at keeping everyone updated with respect to production schedules, so it is not like your knife is two months overdue and there is no word from the company. Producing these knives is a complex business, and relies on various suppliers. Guy and Ellie are attempting to get control over more aspects of production, bringing those aspects in house, but things happen that do not allow delivery of knives when they were originally predicted. I too criticized Survive! in the early days as there were no updates coming out of the company with an extremely long wait for the GSO 10. But now Ellie is updating here and on the website regularly, and elsewhere, exactly where production is. To me, this is what was required to continue to participate in Survive! pre-orders, taking advantage of an exceptional price.

I didn't know about survive till last year. Any time I have ordered its been on time or early. Its still an excruciating wait, but that's just the Christmas effect. Knowing its around the corner but its just not here yet. I've been very pleased and surprised by some packages.

I agree with above statements and will add, context is everything. I ordered a custom firesteel over 6 months ago, and in that time have ordered and received 4 different survive knives (2x3.5, 1x4.1, 1x5.0) and a complete custom order from Europe.... I don't have much money tied up in it and I understand the maker has had some material shortage issues, so it's not the end of the world...point being is that in a small business there are always some ups and downs and you have to decide for yourself if you are along for the ride....as for me.. last december I owned 0 survive knives and now have 8 with one on order. I enjoy this particular ride

Somehow I did not make this connection, you seem like such a die hard I figured you had a longer running history.
I have some catching up to do :D

Personally, I've been an enthusiast way longer than I've been an owner of S! products. I said somewhere else here that S! got my attention at a weird time when I really wanted a 5 directly from the company, but the 5 was far down the production line up. I waited and got involved here and followed the company's progress and I have to say now that I have some GSO's in my possession it was well worth the wait.

I have 3 Survive Knives now, and 4 on order. They are worth the wait. When is the last time you heard of anyone who was displeased once they received their S!K? Two of mine are "factory seconds," and I still can't find a flaw. I have 4 knives on preorder (2X 4.1... one for my brother, 1X 4.7, 1X 2.7), and would have ordered more if my wife wouldn't kill me. I would love to have them all now, but I am patient with the process because I am so happy with the product. Another point... nobody likely buys a S!K as their first knife. Enjoy what you have now. Get the most you can out of it. When you get your S!K, the comparison between the two will be even more sweet.

Well said, forte.

While I'm on a roll, I'll add that when 3.5's and 4.1's and 5's came available I'm confident that getting them ready and out the door was a priority, but they had other things going on. Guy is constantly trying to do things better and if all he did was sharpen knives then we would have no new finish or 2.7 or new handle ergonomics. That's gotta be worth the wait, right?

Long time lurker I had wanted a 4.1 for well over a year before i scored one. oddly enough the knife that started it for me was the necker, when they were available for a very short time last winter. Once i saw how awesome such a small handle-less knife could be....had to have more... I had been looking into a number of companies to find that perfect "outdoor blade" but just hadn't pulled the trigger until i was finally able to get a 4.1. the other 2 4.1's came from the secondary market.

I agree 100% except I think it's way better than Christmas Day when they show up! Haha! I never got a Red Rider BB gun for Xmas.

I didn't either. I got the pump action with scope. I killed three dove a blue jay and a road runner. Brought my catch home to show dad and he flipped. Couldn't believe I killed all of em.

Hey Guys, I am new to the site and have been wanting a few Survive knives.
Can anyone tell me a rough estimate on ETA if you preorder?
The knives I'm interested are the 10,6 and 4.5.
I appreciate any info.

If you go to the Survive! Website, and look at the production schedule, you will see what is in prodction, and what is coming up next. That should give you a relative ideas of what is next. Models that are in production will likely be in stock once the pre-orders ship. But they will probably go fast.
