Anyone have any experience with this watch? I am thinking about buying this and a cheap compass as a double checker. It wouldnt be used for hardcore navigation, just basically making sure I am walking in a "straight" line. What do you think?

I have one, loved it until time to change the battery - timex has fixed it such that an individual can not change the battery, I like to carry a spare so it can be changed in the field, not happening with this watch.

Hey Guys..

got one..

Love it,, and pretty accurate to boot...

About 3 weeks after I got it..
I had wandered into a dense thicket of pine in the dark with my spotlight, while waiting for my ride home after Bear hunting (Yaa I know,, Not Too bright, But I did have my Riot gun with me)..

Anyway I got turned around and Everything looked the same.. I had No idea where the snowmobile path was (this was in summer) and had a slight panic as I surely didn't want to wait in the Thicket...

I remembered I had my compass, but hadn't calibrated it yet..
Took me a minute or so to set it up, then it gave me a direction...
I was only a few meters from the trail, but without it I could have wandered deeper in...

So yaa it's a good compass,, I really enjoy having it with me all the time...

Sweet. Is there any difference between the different kinds? On Timex's site they have like 4 E-Compasses, which have different visual qualities. Also, can someone explain why the outer band turns and what it is for? I have an idea, but not positive. Thanks guys.

I have two different types of Timex digitals and they are great and very handy. There is/was also a Timex analog type which may be discontinued. The analog looked very cool and had an actual needle which gave a bearing when you pushed the button. Once in a while it would point to magnetic North too. Calibrating it did no good. Timex replaced it three times. Stick with the Digitals they work really well and are surprisingly accurate according to a Silva and a Brunton I cross checked them with.

I don't have a compass/watch, but I do have the e-trex garmin GPS with electroinc compass. In fact after I had my personal one, I bought 2 others for work. The regular GPS compass requires you to move at a good clip for the compass to get a bearing as it needs to detect the difference between points to determine direction. If you aren't moving fast enough, the error or measurement really mucks up the bearing estimate.

The Etrex has an altimeter and electronic compass. You can program it to switch to electronic compass at low speed and revert to the GPS-based bearing at higher speed (more accurate). They work really great. Having one on your watch would probably be quite good too. Like any form of electronic navigation it doesn't hurt to have a non-battery form of backup.

I had on for about 3-4 yrs. good for the $$$ but the compass started getting off the last year I had it, I checked it w/ my sylvia & had to recalibrate it so many times that I could'nt depend on it anymore.:(
