Anyone have any tips for finding true tinder fungus? I peer at every birch tree I come across when in the woods, but have never been able to find any. Maybe I am just in the wrong part of the country. I would really like to get my hands on some for the firestarter test I am working on, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

It grows on Birch trees. I don't see alot of it, but did find some this last fall. It's the rustier lookin stuff in the pic, but it's black on the outside and grows where the tree has been wounded.

I noticed you have some "hoof fungus" too, I see that all the time, but I had a lot of difficulty separating the thin usable layer between the core and the outer skin. Any tips?

I have never seen that on any trees. Has anyone ever found it in the southeastern US?

mewolf1, you are talking about the stuff at the top of your pic, right?
