Tiny little useless lanyard holes...

i'm noticing nowadays that more and more folders are featuring lanyard holes that are too small to slip 550 through.

can someone please explain to me the point of their existence?

i'm sure knife companies are familiar with the width of 550 cord and that's what most of use for lanyards.

please help me understand because that seems lazy on their behalf (like they include the feature just to say it's there but it offers little to no functionality).

i'd rather it not be included at all if it can't be used properly.

i do realize that people have all sorts of tricks to force the cord through a smaller hole but that's ridiculous when it should just come drilled wider from the manufacturer.

spyderco has it figured out but i can't say the same for other companies..

anyone care to engage in a polite, non argumentative discussion about this?

Lanyard holes, in and of themselves, are useless.
I despise lanyards, and think of the extra hole as pointless.
I carry BIG knives. Not little knives that need handle extensions.
I like tip-down carry, and thus a lanyard just takes up pocket space.
If I was carrying tip-up, I would view a lanyard as making it easier for someone to snatch the knife out of my pocket.

naturally they're not for everyone but that's strictly a matter of opinion.

for me personally, 7 inch knives and under are fair game for lanyards.

not really asking whether or not you like lanyard holes...

but whether you do or not plenty of people find them useful (as do i).

which is probably why the majority of folders include the feature.

again, i'm just wondering why companies include tiny lanyard holes that can't accommodate 550 cord..

Which manufacturers are you thinking off? ZT, Benchmade, Spyderco, Pohl Force and every other brand ive owned have all been able to fit a 550 lanyard.

two off the top of my head are the crkt carajas and ontario rat folder.

i've had a handful of kershaws with the same issue (holes too small for 550).

i do recall stating that spyderco usually gets it right..

For the ones with a small lanyard hole, I use a combination of 110 and 550.

awesome advice and pic. the speedform was another particular example that i forgot to include (your pic reminded me).

still leaves me wondering why they don't just make it wider from the start but that's clever indeed.

that the zdp leek?

If you don't mind the finish getting a little worn you could try running a split key ring through the small hole and putting your lanyard on that.

i've definitely considered that but i'm afraid that ill damage my blade if i accidentally close it on the ring.

i hope they start beefing these things up.

again, i'd rather them not exist if i have to macgyver the thing to get it to work :)

thank god that spyderco picks up on these things..

I use either 110 or gutted 550 if it is a small hole. I have gotten ungutted 550 through a Skyline and Blur by cutting at an angle and singeing the end.

up until today i didn't know 110 existed. are there still individual strands inside?

educate me..

Try type 1 cord. It has a braided outer sheath with five inner strands and is rated to 100lbs. 550 cord is type 3 cord with braided sheath and seven inner strands rated to 550lbs.

I'm more of a function over form type so I got rid of the few lanyards that I tied in my experimental stage except for two. I still have one (550) on a mini grip. And use a Chippewa shoelace for my dragonfly. Shoelace works just fine, and is smaller.

Close it on the ring in case the ring flips over on top of the channel the blade closes into? Of close on the ring where it goes through the lanyard hole?

If it's the first then the smaller split key rings would work since they can't flip over.

My thoughts exactly.

Me three. +1 to this. Just do away with the lanyard holes altogether, already.

that's pretty opinionated wouldn't you say? especially since i'm sure you're intelligent enough to realize that some ppl not only find them useful but actually enjoy using them.

please don't destroy the thread by taking it off topic.

this isn't a place to cast your vote.

thanks.

Just because members don't agree with your opinion doesn't give you the right to question their intelligence.
