I went to a sale at Eastern Mountain Sports. They had this really nice thermal top for ONE DOLLAR! It was a sample of one of those high-tech fabric mountaineering thermal underwear lines they decided not to carry. So needless to say, I wore it all the time. It became my favorite shirt. One day while I was cutting something off with an abrasive wheel, I looked down and a huge hole was forming on my belly. The sparks from that little wheel just ate my nice shirt right up! Grrr!
 
You can buy Nomex clothing like the race car drivers wear and if that isn't enough you can get silica fabric for much higher temps.
 
Years ago I worked in a TV store, one of the owners was always leaving a soldering pen on the edge of the bench. Whenever he reached over for a tool, he would set fire to himself.

One day the hardware store up the street had these 3 pound fire Extinguishers on sale, we bought one, went back to the shop, grabbed him and cable tied it to his leg.

That was about the third time I got fired from there.
