Tip Broke :(

I moved in to my first house yesterday. Today, I was opening boxes with my small Classic Sebenza (S30V). I was thoroughly enjoying the use of the knife. I stuck the knife in a box so it would stand there while I grabbed another box. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the knife slowly lien to the side and then fall out of the box and over the edge. It fell about 12 inches onto the tile floor. It didn't land on the tip but seemed to land on the side of the handle butt or tip and then rattle to the ground.

When I picked it up I felt a sickness in my stomach. The tip had been bent or mashed to the side. I rubbed the tip with the meat of my thumb and it came off completely. Now, when I look straight on at the tip, I see a small flat trianlge where the edge meets the two sides at the spine of the blade. My wife asked if a knife should break like that. I told her any knife will break if dropped from 12". I don't know if that's true. It feels like it shouldn't be. But I don't want her to look askance at my more expensive knife purchases in the future. I may be angry tomorrow. But today, I'm too sad to blame CRK, me, the tile, the box, etc.

I'd like to put an emoticon on here but don't see one that captures the depth of my sorrow.

Bad news. How much of the tip broke off? If you send it in, they can regrind the tip so you'd hardly know, if it isn't to big a break. Give them a call:

i'm guessing that that since the tip bent and folded rather than broke off completely, the tips of sebenza's have a lower hardness.

NO knife should break falling a mere 12" onto ceramic tile.

I'm shocked the Seb did...........which makes me think that it was actually damaged prior to falling and that the fall simply bent the already fatigued tip.

I'd hope that Chris Reeve would take care of this. Please keep us posted as to how he addresses this issue.

That really sucks. I'd like to think my Seb could handle a mishap like that without that kind of damage. I dropped my SS Delica-4 in my garage directly on the tip once with absolutely no damage whatsoever. I know ceramic is harder than cement, but still, a tool should be able to handle some misuse or accidents.

Dropping it on the tip from just 12" shouldn't require much more than a steel or a fine stone to touch up.

I'd take a photo and send it to their customer service. Describe the circumstances and see what they say.

Sure you've not been looking for an excuse to replace the blade with a damascus blade? I don't know, but this could be that perfect excuse...;) :D :p

I e-mailed CRK explaining what happened and asking if they'd repair or replace the balde following an examination of the knife.

Before this, the knife was less than 30 days old and had cut nothing but paper and arm hair. I don't think I'd used the tip for anthing other than lookin' at. Though I did stare awfully hard at it once. (I've moved on in the grieving process and I feel I can joke about this now.)

Even if they can't regrind the tip. If you e-mail them and send the knife in to them they will be able to put a new blade in your knife.

I'm not sure if it will be covered under warrenty or not but, would still be cheaper than having to replace the whole knife. Just rememmber that each blade is hand fitted to each handle so you will probably need to send in your broken sebbie.

Sorry for your loss, I'm sure that CRK will be able to work something out with you.

If that could break a Sebenza, my two would be long since broken beyond recognition or repair...:D

Call or e-mail and see what they say. They'll probably need to see the knife, so expect to send it in.

Well, i would be surprised if CRK will do anything else than replace the blade.

Keep us updated.

And, yes, your wife was right to expect much more than this!

12" on to tile should not be a problem. I think it's a rare steel or HT problem.

So just so I get this, because I don't yet, How much was broken off, 1 or 2 mm? .25 inch?

I broke the tip off of mine by prying on a metal fixture (duh). It was not more then 2 mm.

I broke the tip off of mine yesterday, of course I really can't complain, this knife has seen quite a bit of use.;) My Sebbie here is near the end, I've ground away about half of the top ring of the thumbstud in sharpening, but the handle is in excellent condition, lockup still perfect, and it's ready for a new blade soon.
You may want to have the tip repaired and resharpened, then enjoy using the thing, save your money for a damascus blade replacement or another Sebbie, try an inlay!!! The Sebbie is much more that the sum of its parts, it'll take a nick and keep on cuttin, they are best when used!

I broke the tip off of a large Classic cutting a rubber gasket. Evidently, somehow I hooked it under the metal next to the gasket. I was able to take it down with a stone and you could hardly tell that it had broken off.

I guess that it would depend on how much broke off if you could fix it or not. It would be a shame to have to replace the entire blade.
