Tip Broke :(

They said a replacement blade would be $115. As for the amount broken off, I didn't measure it. Enough to send it back in, but not so much that they can't (I think) grind a tip back on.

I think you are doing the right thing getting the blade replaced and, for the quality blade and repair job that you can be assured of, the $115 isn't bad. However, I think CR should replace this blade under warranty given your defined conditions under which the tip broke. Someone comes around here advertising a top quality knife and charges $400+ for it, I wouldn't expect it to fail under those conditions as they hardly qualify as "abuse".

CRK called me today. They just received the knife. I forget the guys name, but he was really nice. He noted that the tip was dented (some material did come off though) and said that they could sharpen a tip back on. Other people may not have sent it in to be "fixed" but I think some others would have done the same. No problem with the heat treat. The angle at which the knife hit the ground was enough to dent it. I'll only pay for return shipping.

I'm happy with the company's response (which was exceedingly prompt). I've been carrying a Spyderco Native after work since I parted with Sebenza. Now I feel the Native is too bulky and awkward. I guess I'm spoiled now.

I`m a perfectionist myself, and a dented/broken off tip would probably bug me quite much too. Yet, I think it`s a good decision to just have them re-grind it. It probably won`t be too noticable. A whole new blade would be a bit over the top for that-on the other hand, it wouldn`t be bad to have a replacement blade for the knife, just in case or for rougher tasks....... . ;)

I have dropped one of mine over 5 feet onto a cement floor and nothing happened at all. I would be surprised if CRK don't fix this under warranty.:)

Was it closed? :p

Just kidding. CRK's service is extremely fast in my experience, so you'll probably have your Sebenza back soon

Was the tip really broken off or the very edge just bend a bit?

It is a little of a difference, if the very tip just bend around or if a part of the blade brakes away.

Was it like shown in the pictures shown above, or not?

It may be important, b/c if someone reads, that Sebbies tips break that soon (12" or 30cm) without warranty, it may have an influence on buying that type of knife.

How could someone say, the heat treat was ok without examination?

My recollection is that a piece of the tip bent to the side and then broke off when I ran my finger over the tip to confirm what I was seeing. However, at the time I was not paying attention to the particulars of the problem and, later, didn't find any steel on the floor. The tip did look a little like the picture in this thread. It was immediately noticeable when I picked the knife up.

Like I said, some may have ignored it and happily continued to use the knife and some may have fainted. I was visibly shaken by the horrific ordeal. :o

I was in the office when TSR's knife arrived. Less than 1 mm of the tip had broken off, all part of the cutting edge. We will do a sharpening job such that I personally will not be able to distinguish TSR's blade from new. As with any sharpening job on a CRK knife, there is no charge.

Just a note on Sebenza blades -- Chris favors high hollow grinds for several reasons. Perhaps the most significant is that the blade can be sharpened again and again, and the blade stays appropriately thin at the cutting edge through these sharpening cycles. Just as m.s.peterson shows below, the blade changes shape and character as it is worn away from use, but continues to be easy to sharpen and effective doing work for you! CRK will replace slightly used blades at the customer's request, but IMHO, if you're having us do that, you are missing out on one of the key reasons to own a Sebenza. Use those blades!

I received my knife back today. We sent it in with just the knife with a broken tip. It came back in another CR box with a new lanyard. The tip is back where it should be, the blade was sharpened, and it looks like some of the sractches were taken out of the handle (but I could be wrong. There weren't that many anyway). I didn't even pay for return shipping.

All in all, this is as close to recieving a brand new knife as possible. I am very happy with CRK's response to a what I perceived to be a problem.
