Tip down carry..Why?

How can anyone have trouble with tip-up? The blade spine is against your pocket, and usually you don't shove your hand into the pocket with the knife, you just put your thumb inside your pocket on the handle and pull it out. Tip-down leaves the blade spine free to open, IMHO.

Unless you don't have it in the pocket - both methods have the blade spine against your pocket. And both are free to open, assuming the correct grip. However, I do like that I can easily grab and flick in one smooth motion to get a tip down blade out very easily and quickly.

I carry a Benchmade/Emerson CQC 7 and a Spyderco Endura Stainless. Both tip down, both for many years. The Benchmade was carried for the whole time I was on Active Duty and it saw some of the roughest and worst conditions I can think of. Running, jumping, falling, swimming and fast roping and never once did it open when it wasn't supposed to. I never had an issue with deployment speed either. For the last few years I have carried the Spyderco more and although it hasn't been subjected to the same conditions as the CQC, it has still gone through some rough stuff. It hasn't opened accidently either. Maybe I am the minority here, but two knives, almost 7 years and no problems? Just my .02 Pesos (at current exchange rate, less than two cents)

i very much prefer tip up, all my fav knives right now are tip up (ie spyderco ATR, emerson CQC8, ER fulcrum 11) i still carry my crawford perfigo, but i practice draws/etc and prefer to stay with the tip up. just seems to work better for me.

have had tip up open in my pocket (ie ATR), BUTi have had tip down open up in my pocket also (ie spyderco gunting and khalsa), i'm not convinced tip up/down matters that much in that regard. either one can open up on ya if ya arent carefull imho.

anyway very much prefer tip up myself.

Since I only carry lock-back folders, I don't worry about my knife opening inside my pocket.

As for tip-up vs tip-down: judging from my favorite knives to carry (G-10 Police, Calypso Jr, Centofante III, Mariner) I seem to prefer tip-down.

I can access and open my tip-down folders easier and slightly quicker than my tip-up ones.

I prefer tip up carry. With my Kershaw Leek, I can insert my index finger into my pocket, position it on the opening stud, and so open the blade as I draw the knife from my pocket. With my Cara Cara, I can reach the opening hole with my thumb while the knife is in my pocket, so I can partially open the blade as it clears my pocket and then flick it the rest of the way open.

Neither knife has come open in my pocket, probably because of the strong detent / locking lever and because I always carry with the knife jammed against the seam of my pocket. I am much slower with tip down carry, but I haven't practiced drawing that way as much. Regardless, drawing a knife fast is mostly just fun, and I hope never to be in a situation where saving a second on a draw makes a difference.

For pure drawing speed, you can't beat a Cold Steel Ti-Lite or an Emerson Wave!

I hear that. If it comes to that point I'm not going to be going for my knife anyways, but another trusty EDC companion with a trigger on it.
