Tip down carry

I just picked up a CRKT foresight. It's a cheaper knife I've been wanting for awhile now and I'm fairly impressed with it. My biggest gripe is the one point position pocket clip. I can't stand carrying my knife tip down but the strangest thing about this knife is that even tho it's a tip down carry the lanyard hole is at the bottom of the knife. Am I missing something here? When the knife is clipped in your pocket the paracord would have to run all the way up the inside of your pocket and out. Unless you didn't use the clip at all in which case the paracord probably wouldn't work anyway. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1395178756.475477.jpg

Can anyone explain this to me?

From what I have heard it is tip down to help keep it closed from
opening in your pocket

Unless you put a tip down knife against the inside of your pocket, it won't help keep it closed. A tip up knife against the seam of your pocket will prevent it from opening.

I was questioning more of the reason for the lanyard hole at the bottom of the knife when it's clipped in your pocket

I think you're assuming the position of the lanyard hole at the rear of the knife is specifically placed for aiding in drawing a clipped, tip up knife, but its not. That's just where lanyard holes/bails go, at the end of the handle. So a tip down knife shouldn't have the lanyard hole positioned near the pivot just because the orientation in pocket is different.

The lanyard hole is most likely for people who slip a knife in their pocket and don't use the clip.

I have carried knives for almost 50 years and can't get accustomed to a clip. I usually take them off but some I just leave on the knife and use them.

Lanyards have been around for much longer than pocket clips. So the lanyard is always on the end, where the wrist is. Because a lanyard, traditionally, is ment to go around your wrist. Lanyards were never meant to assist drawing from a pocket. That's just what it's used for in recent history.

When I bought my first Spyderco knife, the Police Model in 1989, they were all tip down. So tip up is awkward for me.

I carry strictly tip-down unfortunately. Very frustrating lately with all the awesome new ZT's and Spyderco's coming out that are strictly tip-up. Very frustrating that it "suddenly" is too much to ask to drill some extra holes for a swappable pocket-clip. So now you know how I feel ;)

Anyway, I don't understand the issue about lanyard holes, because they will always be at the end of the handle of a knife. Doesn't matter if it is a fixed blade, an axe or a folder. Lanyard holes are for lanyards to put around your hand or over your wrist for when the knife IS OPEN and/or when YOU ARE USING IT. This more appreciated with large choppers than with a small folder, but that doesn't take away the original/intended function of it.

From my point of view a lanyard hole at the beginning (front) of the handle makes perfect sense for choppers and is much better than a lanyard hole at the end - if it's at the end and you loose your grip, the knife will fly away by typically a grip length. If you're using a lanyard hole in the front of the handle, the knife will travel far less if it travels at all.

Agreed. Often they're on both sides with large choppers, or they have open rivets throughout the entire handle (e.g. Busse, Scrapyard).

Someone might want to lash it to their pack, pals, or other attachment of some kind.

Putting a lanyard at the top of a folding knife is impractical from a manufacturing standpoint. They would have to mill out a groove in the pivot of the blade so the lanyard wouldn't affect the blade opening.

I must've worded my post badly. I wasn't saying the lanyard hole should be next to the pivot because that's where the clip is, I was questioning why there would be a lanyard hole at all if the only option is tip down carry.

For me, my carry orientation depends on the particular knife - e.g., when I carry a RAT-1, I prefer tip-down; but when I carry an Endura or Delica, I prefer tip-up. Regardless of the knife, though, I tend to stay away from lanyards on folders.

I think the majority does. I do too. Don't mind the hole though. Wish there would be more folders with swappable pocket-clips

Lash it to your pals? They might disagree with that...

I wish all knives had the 4 position clip. For some reason some crazy people prefer a knife with tip down carry. Granted all I care about is l/r tip up, if the design accommodates all 4, why not do it?

Depends on where you carry it. In your front pocket, yes, tip-up will keep it closed. Against the edge of your back pocket, tip-down will keep it closed.

Also, i forget where I saw it, but I think it was from a member here. They were commenting on how the pocket clip shape and position on the Foresight made it one of the few knives with pocket clips that you absolutely cannot feel the pocket clip in your hand while using it. Admittedly, I've gone clipless on a knife just because of how bad the pocket clip felt in hand.
