Tip down carry

When I bought my first Spyderco knife, the Police Model in 1989, they were all tip down. So tip up is awkward for me.

Tip-up knives have been made for a long time too, but when I first started buying modern knives it seemed that most models were tip down. Now I would guess that more models are tip-up. I own and carry both, for me tip-down is faster and more secure. I was carrying a Benchmade 581 today, and it is only available tip-up. The few times I used it today I was aware each time that it is slower and less secure for me to draw it than if it was tip down, but I still like it. If I bought only tip down it would certainly make my EDC rotation a lot smaller.

Some people prefer tip-up so they can use a lanyard. Some people do it so they can put the blade against the seam of their pocket and be more secure. Some people like tip-up because they carry in pockets other than right front, or they have a different kind of right front pocket from what most people have. I read where a lot of people say they like tip up just because they like it, and they can't provide other justification. Other people like tip up carry and admit that it is slower for them.

Even though I said I thought tip up was awkward, I agree, I have them in my rotation too.

I carried my Navaha tip up for a week before I switched the clip. Although I bought a spydie bead lanyard for my Szabo, which I intend on leaving tip up.

I have a CRKT ripple and the tip down only drove me crazy. So I removed the clip and put a lanyard on it. It is very thin, fits in a coin pocket and the lanyard makes it very easy to find. Also a lanyard give a bit more purchase; from what I understand essentially makes the handle a bit longer so you have a better grip in different places.. SO to answer your question most simply, the lanyard hole is there for people who go clipless. I like it for some knives.. worth a try

Never seen the sense in lanyard holes on folders, to be frank. I personally don't know anyone who chops with a folder...

Tip down is how I've always carried. I haven't yet gotten a knife oriented towards tip up.

It's very hard to carry a fixed blade tip up too.
