When I am buffing thin blades 1/16" thick I take a piece of 2X4X 18" and drive a finishing nail into one face near the end with about 1/4" exposed. This end becomes the Top.

I hang the blade on the nail by the top pin hole and with the blade resting on the face of the 2X4 I buff the face then turn the blade over and buff the other face. I do this because I get a little spooked trying to buff a thin flexible blade, they move around too much.

Hey George...

On the front where you put the blade,, you should put a guard on it,, so if that nail ever gave way, it doesn't shoot the knife across the room,,or worse yet into you!

I've polished several thousand of my bronze maple leaves and have had a few escape my fingers...

I couldn't believe that they stuck into the plywood wall in front of my polisher...

That reminds me of the time I was polishing horse shoes and one let loose. I had on googles,, a shield and a resperator and still got a wicked black eye from it! LOL

George,

I'm generally in favor of new makers learning by doing, but the buffer problem is one I hope they learn by listening and reading.

If I had paid attention to what I was told 10 tears ago I'd still have the end on the third finger of my right hand. The same incident sent the blade flying high speed past my right ear.

So if ya'll have a new buffer, please do not let your attention wander even for a second.

Take care,

GaryB
