Hi guys,

Here is a neat tip-up/down clip prototype by Surefire for its flashlights. It allows choice of carrying style without having to reposition the clip. Do you think that Spyderco should be working on something similar?

Hey Carlos-
I think its a good idea myself. I think I remember a post about that very thing awhile back. I'll see if I can find it.

Hi guys,

Sure...As long as it is also reversable for either right or LEFT-hand carry. As a "lefty", THAT is important to me.:).

IMO, for it to work on a knife, it would have to be HUGE!
Think about it: unless you want half the knife sticking out in one of the carry positions, the clip would have to run almost the entire length of the knife. Also, I don't think it would be as strong as a regular clip. And one more thing, bending out the outer portion would be hard to undo as you can only bend it back so far.

Also a clip like that increases snag chances.

So in short, don't bother. I'd rather see knives drilled and tapped for both methods.

Drill and tap for tip up or down. However, for a purely serving and saving knife (Endura, Rescue and others) where a professional is using their knife on the job (no concealment necessary) a clip such as on the Surefire would be fine.

i guess it could work but im also more concerned with reversible left and right clip. cause frankly tip up or down doesn't matter too much with me but if it's only right side clip then that puts another negative mark when considering a new purchase

I also agree with TOTS completely.
Additionally such doubly bent clip would be at least twice as thick as regular one. I think this could affect handling comfort significantly. Flashlight is not knife, you are not forced to hold it safely and securely applying noticeable force to the handle.

Also agree with TOTC, drill and tap for all options.

And put blank screws in empty slots. I hate redundant holes!

I'd have to agree with TOTC. For example, if you have that clip mounted on a normal spydie, it would ride at the same height as a tip up but ride very high on a tip down version. I think for the smaller spydies, this could really work, but doubt it for something the size of Endura or above.
Edited for some stupid logic error.

As TOTC said, that clip would be too vulnerable to catching on things, causing it to bent out of shape and the knife to be lost, not to mention the scratching that it will do to furniture, car doors, etc. I suggest that Spyderco work on simplifying changing mounting methods for the clip so that it may be changed to tip up/tip down and right or left handed as easily as possible, thereby increasing the market for its products.

For my own preference, I like tip down and I am right handed, so I prefer the clip on the right side with the blade to the front. I have had bad experiences with tip up blades coming open in my pocket, so I do not really trust them.

The clip in the picture looks bulky. I like the idea of 4 positions for the clip as others have mentioned. There are a lot of good knives that I wouldn't realy consider because I don't like tip-down carry.

I agree with most here - the clip in the pic does look bulky and prone to snagging on stuff. Like Dann said, give me a left/right reversible clip any time.

However, for a purely serving and saving knife (Endura, Rescue and others) where a professional is using their knife on the job (no concealment necessary) a clip such as on the Surefire would be fine

I dont think that clip would last long on a knife being carried for duty, I can see it breaking off, bending or just getting lost using that clip, plus the fact it would just be big on a knife.

It looks too bulky, and the tension should be tight on both options. From the pic, it looks as if the 'outer' clip would attach fine, but cold the 'lateral' tension toward the handle of the knife easily be loosened?

I'd rather have a second set of holes, and a 'plug' of some sort, or extra screws.

boo on anything tip down. just change all of them to tip up carry.

I don't think I fully understand the tip-up and tip-down controversy and I would like to hear more about it.

For myself, my Native has a truly ambidextrous clip and I like it tip-up because it puts the clip in the cup of my palm where I don't notice it.
It seems to me a tip-down clip would interfere with my grip.
However, I tend to favor the paint brush grip, and perhaps in the saber grip I would not notice a tip-down clip as much.

Nonetheless, I really like the idea of a knife drilled and tapped for both tip-up and tip-down, right and left handed, with "dummy" screws in the empty holes.
This would let me experiment with every possible configuration.

The main thing is that with tip down you have to turn the knife before you open it, and tip up puts it already in the correct position. But I dont ever make a descision about a knife based on this I dont think it makes much of a diff. maybe .5 second on the opening of the knife. it's all pref.
