Tip up/down

Hi guys, I figure this is a good topic for my first post. I edc mostly benchmades so im going to say tip up cause i like to open with the axis.

No disrespect to anyone, but, tip up, tip down, tip sideways. Isn't this really just a matter of personal choice.

hmm i guess this did turn into the same old talk, i guess a better thing i should have asked is, why are there some knives that break your habit?

What is the problem? My lockbacks go tip up and my linerlocks go tip down. I had a liner lock open in my pocket once and it cut me. It was tip up. Since then, I understood the reason for tip down on linerlocks. I have little trouble adapting when I switch knives. Maybe I missed something.

For me, it depends on the knife. I just have to get a feel for each one, and determine how it's most comfortable.

I'll have to try again. I just can't get my thumb down in there enough to where the knife comes out enough in the palm to avoid repositioning. As I've said before, I could be missing something, but I can;t find it yet. That said, I only have two tip-up knives, and I rarely carry them. Maybe the knife's design does actually have something to do with it. Some of BM's line I've avoided buying simply because the knife is tip-up carry. As of yet, I can't do it. Kudos to you guys who can.

I find that I'm kind of hooking the clip with my middle finger as I draw. This gives me definite control of the knife and positions it properly in my hand as it comes out of the pocket. Hope this helps!

I don't clip my pocket EDCs so I don't care how the clip is oriented on those. They go in my pocket tip up and that's how they are drawn.

For my IWB knives (Para-Millie, Millie, SnG), I prefer tip down. The draw is much faster and more secure for me. The SnG, of course, is tip up only. I've adjusted. I really like that knife.

Tip down,

twenty some stitches from a tip up knife that opened in my pocket.

Tip down never had a problem and if you grab it that way and give it the flick, its open as fast as an automatic.

Tip up... goes back in the pocket smoother for some reason.. Plus with tip up... Your pants pocket sort of keeps the blade shut regardless.... I carry a griptillian 551 and the axis lock works great at keeping the blade closed any how... I keep from buying many knives because i dont care for tip down...

I really don't understand how people are carrying clipped knives that they can say tip up can come open in your pocket and cut you. The only way I can think of is on the pocket closest to your fly, and the blade falls open into the pocket.

And if that's the case, why not reverse the clip?

Exactly.... which means you really cant reach your hand in your pocket comfortably any how... Mine is always pushed to the far side... I guess in your back pocket it could happen also..... Who knows?

Tip up is by far the fastest presentation, if you have any inkling of using your SUK for SD. However, make sure the knife is well detented, to avoid said 20 stitches. Test it before you trust it, by running and jumping. MVF is right--you can quickly hook your finger under the clip (I use index, not middle finger). The knife has to be sized right for your hand for it to work.

The matter of 20 stitches is partly why I don't like assisteds. And it's an argument in favor or the clip case a la William Henry.

Also, while tip up makes for a fast draw, any clip is slow to put back and really requires 2 hands. At work, I just drop my knife in my back pocket. When you consider the time to get it out, and the time to put it back, no clip is overall faster.

For all the spyderco knives i have that I can reposition it to Tip up, I do so and add a black zip-tie at the top so i have my Pseduo-wave :P (Works especially well with bigger folders like the beloved Manix).

However, some knives that only come in tip down (military) feel very natural in that position. Maybe i've just gotten used to it. Can't imagine what a tip-up Millie would feel like.

Maybe i'm wrong, but to me it feels like liner-locks are made more for tip-down, and back locks more for tip up? Maybe i'm just going nuts.

A BM610 opened partially in my dad's pocket and ate his finger. We couldn't figure out how it happened as the axis generally holds knives shut.
