Tip-up flippers - one glaring problem

Just got my 0770 a couple days ago and the only complaint I have is how much pressure I have to exert on the flipper to get it to open. Gotta bruised forefinger. Still working it to get it to break-in but really...can't imagine it opening in my pocket.

I've never had this trouble and prefer tip-up carry but like the idea of multiple taps for clip carry left/right/up/down.

Kershaw's JYD is another tip-down flipper.

Sounds like you have some weak detents.

My Spyderco Southard was fine; had good strong detent. OTOH, my fancy $725 XM-18 3.5 spanto could easily be flipped open with a wrist-snap...got rid of it in a hurry.

The XM blades are so massive (especially the spanto grinds), I'm not sure there is a detent strong enough to hold the blade in place while still making it flippable with washers...

But my experience has been the same, Southard is perfect and the XMs I have owned could easily be opened with a wrist snap.

This is pretty much what I was thinking. I never have an issue because my hand never slides into my pocket behind the knife. I prefer tip up carry myself, mainly because I think the grip is more comfortable with the clip by the heal of my hand than by my index finger.

I agree with both these comments. As well I like not having to turn the knife around to open it.

I have over 10 big knives in my EDC pile, my ZT 0200 and 0561 have the hardest to open blades of any of my knives.

I'm not sure I understand how this is happening to you. With a tip up flipper the blade is nestled against the rear seam of your pocket, putting the body of the knife in between your hand and the blade. So even if if does open a little bit, the positioning of the knife will keep it from opening much and you shouldn't be able to cut yourself. That is, unless you're carrying it left handed and then the problem isn't tip orientation, it's pocket clip positioning.
Exactly what I was thinking. I only like carrying knives tip up. Most of my knives are flippers as well. Probably the safest way to carry knives in the pocket as long as the clip is on the proper side so the spine of the blade is up against the pocket seam.

I learned that I must carry the tip-up folder against the rear seam of my rt-hand pocket. However, I am most likely to nip my fingers when closing a folding knife in my right hand, and have mildly nipped them on some rare occasions.
