Tip-up liner/frame locks

Guess I'll find out fer sure when the LCC gets to my front door. When I got my BM 750, the first thing that really surprised me was the detent. When I close the knife there is a very solid 'click'. I thought 'This could probably hadle tip-up carry', as opposed to all my liner locks which have no noticeable detent. Since the 750 was still tip-down, I figured the more solid hold in the closed position was a happy little manufacturing variance.

I don't know about all the other LCC D/A's, but mine has a very grippy detent, and I have had no problem with it opening. I even takes a stronger than usual wrist flip to get the blade out. Of course, I mostly carry it in the sheath, so haven't had any experience with strenuous circumstances.

I also have a Keshaw Talon with a tip up carry. That one gets quite a bit of carry at work, and I haven't had any troubles with it, except for the tip of the blade is a little high in the closed postion, and when checking for the knife (unconscious movement to make sure the knife is still in the pocket) I have actually gotten a little nick on my thumb.

What was this thread about, again? I guess I'll say that I'll carry most any knife, and that there are ways to modify carry so that any knife will be safe e.g. back pocket next to wallet; front right next to seam, front left next to seam, or in a horizontal sheath on belt.

Harheart, most properly constructed liner locks should have a positive detent when the blade is closed. When opened you should have a slight strain as the BB pops out of it's hole.

Most noteably all of the MOD liner locks I have display a very noticeable detent action. along with my SERE, Buck Strider and other well made knives. CRK and other Frame locks all have the same type of secure closing method.

Like I said though, I have never had any of my tip up knives bite me. This would run the spectrum from my Spyderco's to my Sebenza's. I'll carry either but I prefer tip up.

I remember a similar thread that was running around just before I bought my Sebenza about a month ago. Seems there was one guy who kept complaining about his Sebenza opening up all the time. The general concensus was that either (1) he had a defective knife (as nobody else had seen this problem) and should send it in for repairs (Chris Reeve himself replied to the thread saying he should send it back), or (2) this guy was full of malarchy. (Did I spell that right -- is it even a real word?) Personally, after reading his posts, I think he was full of it.

Gee, I wonder if we're all "full of malarchy."

This is not a new problem, nor is it a rare problem. Many folks (including myself) have experience the Sebenza opening in the pocket. I posted about this problem three years ago over at KFC. Here's the original thread:

It seems nothing has changed...

I've had them open As I pulled the knife from my pocket, the thumbstud would catch on the pocket, so did your knife just open inside your pocket?

My sebenza has tried to kill me to many times, and I just can't carry it confidently anymore. Every time I run, play with the dog, or do any other type of physical activity, the thing opens in my pocket. What's up with that? My knife is not particularly different from any of the other sebenza's in the store, so I assume they all have this problem. Is there anything that can be done?!?!? Oh yeah, and because it's tip up, I slashed my finger trying to get it out of my pocket once. I just can't wait until the world's best production knife impales me in the leg or stabs my dog.

Yes. I am sorry to say that my Sebenza opened in my pocket within the first week I wore it...

Mine has a good sticky ball-detent, but that doesn't seem to help in the fight against gravity, friction, and Murphy's law. Since the Sebenza has grown in popularity among forum members and more people here have been carrying them, I have noticed quite a few people lately expressing concern over their experience with the knife opening in their pocket. Maybe we will hear from some of them also.
I wore it like one is supposed to, slid all the way back so that the blade is against the back seam of my pocket. I reached for it once, and it had opened in my pocket, even against the seam, and when I retracted the knife it cut a hole in my pants and very badly sliced my index finger. I have never worn my Sebenza that way again. I refuse to carry it unless it is in the belt sheath. It is a very fine knife, but I very rarely wear a belt, so that means that my Sebenza sits in my safe.

I think it has a lot to do with the grabby thumb stud that catches on clothing and of course, the inverted carry. I believe that this is why so many people say "the only way to carry a Sebenza is in the belt sheath". It is a very fine folder, but I agree with only carrying it in the leather belt pouch. I only posted about this once before, many moons ago on recdotknives.com when it first happened under the title "My Baby Bit Me!". I would hate to say anything bad about such a well made classic knife designed by a great guy, but people need to be forewarned and careful, those Sebenzas are sharp, and my finger was cut badly enough to require stitches.

The Sebenza is my daily pocket carry. It has opened twice as a result of the thumb stud getting caught on a loose string in pocket. Almost cut myself once.

I used to own a couple of large Sebenzas and I liked them a lot until I had this experience that you others have had. I almost always wear jeans, not tight but not loose, and I used to carry it in the right front or the right rear pocket. The first time it opened was soon after I bought it and I had it in the rear. It opened up sometime during the day and cut through my jeans pocket and into the upolstry of my car. I thought it was a one time thing so I took the knife apart, cleaned it, tightened the spring lock a little and started carrying it more up front. I had the same problem up there, fortunatly I knew to be cautious when grabbing the knife, so I avoided being cut when I did discover that it had worked it's way open. I was sad about this so I bought another of these well made pocket knives and it happened again. I had to sell them both because I could not risk the danger of being cut. My lifestyle has me working with my hands a lot and typing, and I can't risk a severed tendon or even a cut finger to deal with.

I now own Kelly's "Senator" sebenza, and I did notice that it does come open when I pull it out of my pocket more often than my other sebenza. My other sebenza has only opened when I drew it one time in the 2 years I have been carrying it. It opened because a loose thread actually worked its way around the thumb stud, and so, it would not matter what kind of lock system you had keeping the knife closed, it would still have opened. I am not sure why Kelly's sebenza opens more often when I draw it; both sebenza's have similar ball detent pressure keeping the blades closed.

In my case, there was NOTHING wrong with my Sebenza. The detent, action, and construction were perfect. On Chris Reeve's urging, I sent the knife back to him. He re-drilled the detent and ground down the thumb stud to be less "grabby." Upon its return, the knife opened up on me the very first time I drew it.

I don't mean to bash the Sebenza. I love just about everything about its design and execution EXCEPT for the placement of its clip. I own many other tip-up knives, but firmly believe that the Sebenza should at least have an option to place the clip on the pivot end.

Well in the case you mention of mine, it was the small Sebenza, but also noted that my Benchmade 940 also does the same trick, so I think it's more of a thumbstud type problem and of course it would depend on just what shape your pockets were in...:)
