this has been done a few times before, but since you're a maker and looking for reasons, i'll chime in again. if you're going to reply here, make sure you state your reasons.

i carry tip up IWB as i find it easy to shove my thumb down next to the handle to get a good grip for the draw. trying to find the top of a tip down with my thumb and index finger is a little more time consuming and if i start to look like my dad as i get older (read getting a gut), it could only get worse. i carry spyderco lockbacks or a GT folder here, so i don't worry about the potential problems that liner locks would have as far as opening. for front pocket, i prefer tip down as i can open it faster and more reliable than tip up.

Daryl, are you trying to get a better feel for what you should put on yours?

Hiya Darrel! This one is strictly personal preference. fast draw arguements aside. I have knives in both configurations and I just do a few practice draws when switching from one to the other. But mostly tip down, cause that's how you put the clip on my apogee

and I carry that more than anything else.

As of 2-11-00. I'm in favor of tip-down. See my "Worst stab wound ever", if for some reason you can't figure out why simply by the name of the post I'm referring to. That was not a pleasant experience.

Tip up, if in pocket or waistband w/o a belt.

Tip down, if IWB with my belt running over the clip.

Reason? Helps me grab it right the first time.

My first or second post was on this subject almost a year ago and I replied "tip up".

Now I've since reversed my thinking and prefer "tip down".

My biggest complaint with my Sebenza is that the thumb stud gets snagged on the lining of my pocket or some errant thread that's hanging around there somewhere. It's come open on me a few times but I haven't cut flesh yet.

Also, on the bigger knives, "tip down" seems to be easier to open for me.

I'm not a quick draw artist, but I have to go with Tip Up. I carry my Walker lt/wt in my right front pocket, by the seem, my hand goes on it naturaly. I don't have to turn it over in my hand like I have to do with a tip down knife. I have never had it open in my pocket, I have never cut myself, and I've never dropped it when trying to get it open in a hurry. For myself, I can't think of a situation where a tip down carry would make any sense, but DR if that's all you're making I will learn to adjust.

I prefer tip down carry. When I draw my knife,I like to index my thumb on the opening device, wether it is a stud or hole. For me it seems to allow for a faster presentation, when i`m in a hurry to get my knife open. Also,I believe it`s the safer of the two choices.

I like tip up better. I always have a lockback clipped in my back pocket. I'm not real worried about it opening up on me since it has a good strong backspring, and there isn't much to get caught on in my back pocket. I think you can get a better grip in it too, and your thumb is closer to where its supposed to be once the knife is out of your pocket. Its easier to put back in your pocket too since you don't have to change you grip any, just slide it back to the butt of the handle. Clips are easier to attach to a knife when their for tip up carry too.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

I prefer tip up for blades of about 3.5" or less, and tip down for longer blades. Since most of my blades fall in the 3.5" or under catagory, I'd have to say tip up. Peculiarities in design can affect preference.

Always tip down. I find it easier to index my thumb on the opening hole,{I like Benchmades}, & don't have to worry about the blade opening in my pocket as I draw.

I prefer tip up, it allows me to reach into my pocket, and have my thumb by the thumbstud, instead of having to move the knife in my hand. On Spyderco's I prefer tip down since I use the drop open method, but lately I have only carried my apogee. The thumb studs are smooth enough where they don't get caught on any loose threads in my pocket. I did have that problem with a sabenza before. I guess that if you practice, either way can be pretty fast.

I like tip-up. Puts my thumb on the opener/hole immediately, and gives a more natural grip coming off of the pocket/belt.

I prefer tip down. Sliced my middle finger recently while wearing a pair of hunting pants versus my usual Levi's. The pocket on the hunting pants was slightly different and the large Sebenza was barely open. Luckily not a bad cut and was able to stifle it with my bandanna . . . but I'll carry my Starmate in the future when wearing that pair of pants . . . or get a sheath for the Sebenza.

Mr. Ralph,

This thread has been done more than once. As a moderator, especially, you should know how to search the history.

The proper carry is tang-forward for a horizontal draw by the horns and a double-flip out-to-in opening as you can see demonstrated on my web site.

For more conventional clip folders, God intended these to be carried tip-down. As it says in the Good Book, "Let your folders be carried tip-down, for anything else is from the evil one." I may be paraphrasing just a bit, but it says something like that.

i think you got that wrong.
i remember it well

And Moses said to the childern of Israel "Go forth and smite ye thy ememies in the land of Cannan. Be strong and of good courage, and know that the emerson commanders you carry shall rend thy enemies and drive them out before ye as the plauges the egyptians"

clearly the good book wants tip up blades.
sorry
:-)
