M&M of course tip up is faster, tip down is backwards and only an idiot or a breach baby would carry a knife upside down.

All due respect to PhilL.

I'll go tip up on most blades three inches or under, and tip down on longer blades.

Hey Mike...

Tip up for sure!!!
Pocket carry...

Neck carry Tip Down...

Too bad,, because the majority of production knives are made Tip Down..
The fact that most of them don't have the option to go eith TU/TD or Left/Right is a pain in the A$$..

I wish knife companies would take the extra ten minutes it takes to drill a few more holes and give us some Decent options..

Being left handed gives me only a few options as it is..And you know how I like my stuff Ambi...

Tip down! Tip up is weird. Sadly, the BM-730 is tip up.

It isn't upside down. It gives you a good grip and lets you get your thumb positioned quicker.

Tip up deploys faster; tip down keeps the hinge and related "goins ons" out of lint, pocket crud, etc.

Tip down...

I like my folders loose enough to fling open easily, but tight enough to stay shut...tip up would be too risky - not only could you loose a finger if it opens partially during a skuffle, but it could get stuck in your pocket..and if it's sharp enough, the tip getting stuck in the pocket could cause it to open and slice off who knows what!

I carry tip down, and can deploy as fast as anyone that carries tip up...

I'll practice a bunch with my 730BT (when it arrives) and compare to my 910BT. Then again, that could be unfair because I've been carrying tip down for about 3 years.

Tip-up. This position allows for a lanyard (if the knife has lanyard hole) to be on the outside of the pocket where it should be.

I prefer tip up, but my favorite folders, Benchmade full-size and Mini AFCKs are tip-down. Oh well.....
Tip up, like my Spyderco Goddard ltwt. is much faster to me.

Tip Down!!!! When I got my AFCK a year and a half ago the blade was a bit loose and it opened in my pocket. It did cut up my pocket a bit but I was VERY glad that it was tip down as if it were tip up I would have had a terrible time getting the blade out of my pocket and if it went undiscovered, a BIG cut would have been made on my hand!!!

Tip down is God's will. Consider these points:
  • Tip down carry allows "drop" openings if the opening device is a hole. Whether or not drop opening is a good way to open a knife is debatable, but the option is there.
  • Whatever the opening device is (hole, stud or disk), it will always be deeper down in your pocket, and therefore less accessible, with tip up carry.
  • Most people will hold an open knife with the tip pointing up. If the knife is carried in a tip up position while closed though, the knife must be rotated 180 degrees to get the tip pointing up after opening.
  • Tip up carry exposes moving parts (the pivot and in some cases the lock) to lint and other assorted junk that accumulates at the bottom of your pocket.
  • If the blade accidently opens slightly in your pocket, tip up carry can lead to cut fingers when you reach in to grab the knife.

I'm with Chang on this one, Tip Down.

I have an LEO friend that purchased an Emerson CQC7 and it arrived with the clip in the Tip Up carry position. We both thought nothing of it.

He liked the action even though it seemed a bit loose to me. He had owned the knife only 5 days, that evening he was coming off duty was removing his gear and stuck his hand down to get the knife and BAM

The knife had opened slightly and he ended up with Six stiches on his right forefinger (which also happened to be his shooting hand). Needless to say he and I soon changed the clip to the Tip Down carry position.

Never really gave this much thought until I cut myself twice reaching into my pocket to pull out a knife that was very slightly open due to being a very new knife and therefore being very stiff. So I'd vote for tip down although I'm just more careful now so I don't think it's a big problem.
