Seems to me that the largest proposed benefit of tip up carry is debatable - the speed and efficiency of deployment. If it is faster for someone to present a knife from the pocked with tip up carry as opposed to tip down, the difference will be so miniscule that in the grand scheme of things it will never make a difference...you'd be better served by paying attention to your surroundings and getting educated in self defense and the use of the knife in self defense situations...

The drawback of tip up carry - the high likelihood of an accidental serious hand/finger/leg cut to me makes tip up carry out of the question.

The sheer number of documented cases of hand injuries in this thread alone are proof positive that one should not carry a folder tip up clipped in the pocket.

Even so, if anyone feels that their bacon was saved due to tip up carry and that without a doubt tip down carry would not have sufficed, please share your story with us....

Even if there are documented cases of tip up carry that allegedly saved someone's bacon, I still don't think that the one in a million chance that tip up will save you is worth the highly likely tip up carry injury that you'll encounter at some point in your life....

Why don't we have a nice, non-controversial topic, like which is the best multi tool, or CS vs Busse. Or even better "Are mad dog knives good?" or even another talonite debate......

Tip down

I've never had the problems some have mentioned with tip-up carry. With tip-up, I clip the knife (all mine have clips) in my pocket with the spine of the blade against the seam (back edge of the front pocket). It couldn't open if it wanted to. Might be a different story for a lefty using the same knife, though.
