Tip up or Tip down carry?

I noticed that someone made the statement that they wouldn't buy a Vantage because it was made for Tip up carry only. That started me thinking and I looked through my knives until I found a Taclite #885. It's the only one I've located thats made to carry Tip down.

I tried several Tip up knives and then the Tip down Taclite. I found the Tip up carry ones came out of my pocket in the proper position in my hand and ready to deploy the blade. With the Tip down knife, I had to reposition the knife in my hand before opening it.

My question is, what's the objection to the Tip up carry and why is Tip down prefered by some?

Tip up and the pivot is in the pocket lint. My 486, that is in my pocket is a tip up.

I agree with your assessment, and I also prefer tip-up. But I also understand that once you're used to tip-down, it will work just as well. So in the end, it all comes down to personal preference. People will try to rationalize almost anything, and this is no difference.
Carry the folder the way you find most comfortable. ;)

I prefer tip up, but it may be because I am more used to that. I recently purchased a knife that was tip down carry and found it awkward. I feel like I have to fumble around with it to get it into position to open it. Tip up feels more natural to me. I am right handed and carry my knife clipped in my right front pocket. If I carried it in my left pocket and had to switch hands to use it tip down may work better.

wow what a good question!!!
in my pocket it is however it got in last!!!
lint gets in things regardless..
now take this to a 110 in a holster
or is it sheath? hee hee a good question also but

does a 110 go in point up or point down?!?!?!?

All my carry knives are carried tip up. I have a few that I can't change
the clip to tip up so they don't get carried nearly as much. Any knife I
buy that doesn't come tip up, but has the clip adjustable for it, gets
immediately changed to tip up. I carry in my left front pocket. I slide
my thumb inside my pocketand press the rest of my hand against the
pocket, I slide the knife up and as it clears my pocket my index finger
activates the knife, whether it by a "spydie hole", a stud, or a back
flipper. It's just a natural action, and you don't have to reposition
the knife at any time.

I was referring to those with a pocket clip Dave.

The only way I carry a 110 or 112 is in a belt sheath and they always go in tip up.

Buck in their great Vantage series has the tip up so when you withdraw the knife from your pocket the index finger is right there on top of the flipper.Fast one handed deployment & closing.Buck really hit a home run with the Vantage!
I carry my 110 tip up as well.If ya got link in your pocket, turn it inside out:D

That's one good thing about living in Kansas, I could walk around
with 15 knives clipped to me, and LE would never say a word.

I've heard people talk about it before but it didnt register with me. I pocket carry everything with only limited exception so mine is carried however it flips inside my pocket. I guess if you use the clip or have it in a sheat it makes a difference-hmmm interesting.

any one else had an issue with a built in clip destroying a pocket edge?
are there any that dont destroy the pocket edge?

Yeah, Dave......the ones I carry in a sheath never hurt my pocket!

:)

Remind me.....wasn't the original complaint about tip-up carry that somebody jammed his hand in the pocket and was impaled by a knife point that had strayed out a bit?

?

I have never had a pocket clip wear out my pocket edge!!...

Maybe I am too hard on my jeans and they dont last long enough??? :D

I have worn edges on my right side where I carry clip type knives often. I don't think they are worn out per say, but look slightly frayed. So, to keep from looking like a frayed vagabond, I keep a knife clipped there to conceal my "down home" look....

Combatively a tip up carry mode allows the knife to be drawn for a standard saber grip. For a knife not carried for self defense it really would'nt matter.
