I have an old CPM440V military. I modified it to tip up by re-locating the clip to the butt end. Also for left hand tip up, as that is where I like that particular knife when I carry it.
I bought mine back in 83 or 95, when they first came out. It has been sharpened maybe 20 times in that time, and remains sharp for a long time.
I always wonder if people are grabbing tip down the same way as tip up. I put my thumb in my pocket to grab tip up and pull it into my hand. For tip down I pinch the pivot of the knife coming up underneath the knife to pull it out and thus it seats itself into my hand well. I actually perfer tip up as it is safer to use. It rests closed against the inside of my pocket (I don't understand how people open theirs in their pockets unless it is in the middle of the pocket) and most of all the clip is less dangerous. Once during a martial arts seminar I got cut from the clip of a tip down knife as the clip points into your hand upon any thrusting/jarring motion where the clip on a tip up knife is is pointed in the same direction as the thrust!
My opinion only.
I grew up with tip-down sheath knives, and during the inception of clip-knives; it has taken some mental adjustment, but i much prefer tip-up after trying both... interesting to see the dichotomy the question produces, though...
I carry the Benchmade Mini-Grip with the tip up and a friend who swears up and down that it's a left handed knife and upside down (not too bright) because it's not like the Maxim knife he carries.
If you want to draw a knife in reverse grip then put a tip up clip on the left side of the knife and place it on the right pocket (or vice versa). Works especially good with a poor mans wave!
