Tip up or tip down--pro's and cons

Tip up--just like drawing a gun. It's natural for me. I've had knives open up in tip-down mode. Tip up, against the seam, and all is cool with me.

Tip down lefty pocket for right hand crossdraw though.

If you're carrying tipdown you have to pinch it at the pivot and basically spin it into your palm, not something I want to do.

I don't understand all you people saying that you prefer tip-up because the knife is already in position and you don't have to adjust it.

When I pull a tip-up knife out of my pocket, I'm usually only able to pinch the little portion that is sticking out of my pocket, once I have the knife out, I have to shuffle my hand up the knife into proper position.

With a tip-down knife, I pinch the part sticking out of my pocket and as I lift the knife my palm rotates down into the proper position.

I don't think tip-up offers a speed advantage at all, I would argue the opposite.

That being said, I have many of each style and to be honest, it really makes no difference to me. The only time it's an issue for me is when I forget the orientation of the knife I am carrying that day and expect it to be in the opposite position.

You're grabbing the tip-up knife too close to the clip end. If you initiate the withdrawl from the position you are going to deploy the blade from, it is more fluid than with a tip-down knife.

I must have tighter pockets and shorter clips then

I have both tip up and tip down knives. I for one am not out quick drawing my knife. When I use my knife it's a thought out and conscious movement. So the speedy draw is lost on me. I can tell you I have had tip up knives cut me when deploying them because the blade worked open and that's a Con in my book. That's the only time it has ever been an issue...But more often than not I have a clipless Slippie deep in my pocket so what do I know???:D

Blade deployment is not the reason I would prefer tip up/down. Depending on the size and shape of the clip, a clip positioned for tip up often jabs me in the palm of my hand making some cutting positions uncomfortable.

I have also found that the clip positioned for tip down assists in having a firm grip with the fleshy part of my index finger.

Of course, YMMV .

Dig your thumb down deeper. Other 4 finger come on top of the pocket, and thumb lifts knife out while fingers slide onto handle. Much more efficient and natural for me.

If the blade is against the seam of the pants, and the pocket clip is relatively tight, the knife won't open in your pocket

Mostly tip up in right front pocket. The only tip down carry I have in my edc rotation is a ZT0300, and that's because too much knife sticks out of the pocket for tip up carry. I also keep a really tight pivot and I have increased the tension on the linerlock and framelock knives I carry. With both of these factors I've never had a knife to come open in my pocket, but I can still activate with one hand.:)

Tip down, after getting sliced fingers from a tip-up Axis-lock Benchmade where the thumbstuds grabbed on my jeans and opened up. Never again.

Tip up with the knife at the back of my pocket and the blade held in place secondarily by the pocket itself. If your knife flops open it needs to be tightened.

I prefer tip-up on my Spyderco knives. On other knives, the thumb studs often cause the blade to "wave open" as I draw the tip-up knife from my pocket. A very disconcerting feeling, to say the least. For the non-Spydies, I prefer tip-down.
